Call me egotistical, but this book is the best representation of me ever. If I was poorer, and living in this city at that time, I would be Knut Hamsun. That above comment isn't very much like me, or Knut Hamsun for that matter, but I am wasting a lot of time these days trying to fill in a review for all the books on my list so please forgive me. What I especially enjoyed in this book was the free-flowing of the character, the randomness of his actions. One of the funnier scenes sees him jumping into a cab and pretending to be in a hurry to go somewhere, then arriving at a random spot and taking up a room there. This is a dead-on portrayal of a man trapped within in his own mind and his own fancy, determined to make something of himself but failing at it, and wasting a lot of time in the process. The ending is entirely unbelievable, and yet it is the only ending to which the journey could lead. What future imitators such as Bukowski fail to grasp is the loneliness, the humanity, the earnest self-conscious hypocrisy, and yet the potential for irrational purposeful hope that makes up the soul of this character.

This book contains short stories and novellas from Louisa May Alcott's other genre- thrillers and gothic. Some are more predictable than others and some have surprise endings. There are happy endings and one or two endings that may make you angry! I think it's fun to read the "Jo" type writings of Louisa.

After I read this book, I had dreams about it for several nights. It's a decent book, with a haunting ending.
Oh dear, I wasn't going to use stars anymore. If you love vampires, victorian romances, steampunk universes you will love this fun little book. "...the detrimental effect on your marriage prospects, to be found unchaperoned in a library with a dead vampire!" Completely and utterly hooked...

though i am not a christian, i absolutely respect this book and it's philosophies about living simply and sustainably. it's got great facts and research about how dangerous our lifestyles are becoming for the earth, but it's not all doomsday material, and backs up the criticism with positive solutions that can actually be accomplished by anyone everyday.

An easy read, not especially well-written, that oozes the self-satisfaction of the author. Initially, I thought the premise was an inspiring idea: a family sells their home to donate half its value to a charitable cause. I still think the idea is inspiring but the tone and particulars of this book disgust me. This family typifies the scourge of American culture, i.e. blithe over-consumption, until they try to assuage their guilt by doing something less typical However, even this step, what would be a major sacrifice for most families, doesn't really affect their lifestyle in the end. So what is the message? Sure, it is amazing to be rich people who can afford to give away hundreds of thousands of dollars to a good cause and still be rich afterward but what is the point of writing a self-serving book about it? Does the author really thing that most people are in the same position and will follow suit? He tries to make the pitch that anyone could do what they did but it would certainly be easier to do it when you can still pay cash for a million dollar house and send your kids to private school after you've done your good deed. It would have been so much more classy if they had completed on their "family legacy" in private rather than writing a book about how amazing they are. Ugh. Skip it.

Won this book in a drawing thanks to Nicole. Quick read between suitcases as I get ready to leave on holiday. Thought it would be the kind of story I wouldn't mind putting down for two weeks if I didn't get a chance to finish it before leaving, but I enjoyed this more than I expected, and stayed up MUCH too late reading. A nice little story about a marriage thirteen years on, when the day to day grind starts to steal the thunder over romance and fireworks.
