Odds Against is the first of Dick Francis' books featuring former champion steeplechase jockey Sid Halley. Although you'll sometimes see them referred to as the Sid Halley "series", the fact is that all four of them stand alone perfectly well. (One way or another, you'll want to read them all, so I guess it doesn't matter too much.) In Odds Against, Sid has already suffered his career-ending injury: a passing horse wearing a worn-down racing shoe stepped on his arm after he had fallen during a race, slashing the tendons irreparably and leaving the now-healed arm withered and useless. The injury that robbed him of his beloved racing was the second blow - his wife, feeling like a superfluous appliance in the life of self-sufficient Sid, ended their marriage only months before his accident. Through a friend, Sid has gotten a job working for investigators Hunt Radnor Associates, although he doesn't have much enthusiasm for anything. On a stakeout for Hunt Radnor, Sid gets shot, and is invited to recuperate at the home of his former father-in-law, Charles, with whom he has maintained a close relationship. Once there, Sid quickly realizes that Charles has brought him there not only to heal his gunshot wound, but to act as bait for a couple who may be involved in an attempt to ruin a local racecourse, in order to snap up the land for development. Unfortunately, it also puts Sid in harm's way yet again - not Charles' intention at all, but sometimes a threat to what one has left when they think they've lost everything can be the needed spark to bring that hidden self back to life.

Not as great as the first and third books in the Bartimaeus trilogy, this book still has the trademark humor, fantastic dialogue, hidden political themes, and swift plotting that we all loved in the original trilogy. It was great to spend some time with Bartimaeus again, even if many of the new characters weren't as vivid or fascinating as the humans we got to know in the previous books.
I love the Fancy Nancy books. It is a great way for children to learn new words.
Despite being reviewed in the New York Times (and elsewhere too, I imagine) this book seems to have fallen between the cracks. There are no reviews of it here or on Librarything, and I only discovered it by chance. I liked it a lot. Cohen's writing style grew on me as the book progressed, and the story was good enough to keep me reading even if the writing had not been as good as it was. Best of all, the Hasidic characters in the book are not merely 'spiritual counterweights' to the secular protagonist, like I feared they would be. This is a fun and easy read, and I recommend it highly. And for those who care about such things: the hardcover edition is a nice looking book!

Very well done fantasy setting. The cultures are a bit too derivative of their real world analogs, but Paizo purposefully avoids too much detail in order to allow for improving and adding your own hooks.
I really enjoyed this book, particularly as a scholar of South Asian history and politics. The book is a handful of examples where there was perfect synergy of British and Indian culture, and it's very idealist understanding of Colonial India and the role the British chose to play in it. It makes for charming storytelling, but not exactly accurate history, which segues into my criticism of the book. It does not address the overwhelming evidence of British racial segregation policies that began to take shape in these years. These policies not only created problems for those who did decide to incorporate into Indian culture, but also prevented many people from even attempting to interact across cultures. But keeping that in mind, we should still study the fringes of Colonial Indian society, which Dalrymple is most certainly illuminating, to understand the full picture of this complicated history. Of course, Dalrymple is an excellent historian and writer, which makes this book read like a novel (always making history easier to learn!)

Fun, funny and at times heart-stopping.

An airliner explodes over the Atlantic, and at home the wife of the pilot is left to pick up her own life, as well as deal with the implications that her husband may have caused the disaster. This book didn't grab me on many levels, and by the end, I felt a bit hostile towards it. The big revelations that are unearthed seem a bit preposterous and convenient, and the fact that her husband has personal secrets from his wife... well, you could have seen that coming. I didn't feel emotionally involved at all, and thought the pseudo love-interest addition of the union man was ripped from a grocery store romance. Ugh.

For the first 150 pages, I thought that this one was not as strong as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. But then the story gallops forward and I was caught up in it the way that one should be when reading a mystery. I powered through it to keep learning more about the mystery at hand and have so far thought that this series is more than just a guilty pleasure.
Blah! This one was dry like toast, a snoozer, boring and slow for me. The two star rating is ONLY because the author would whip out OCCASIONAL prose that were pretty. A sad disappointment of a book that could have been a gem. Oh well.
