Everything Joseph Heller ever wrote, other than Catch-22, is utter crap. I'm beginning to believe the theory that it was plagarized...

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a good book. However, Frasier's voice is even more tiresome to me in this book than in others.

Huxley's theme is that our freedom is increasingly compromised by dictatorial government control through various forms of mind control. Looking back now, fifty plus years, the book seems to be more a product of its time and a concern about the Soviet model and its application elsewhere, and it shows the inherent risk involved in making specific, futuristic predictions (regarding the more exotic forms of mind control). Huxley sees a straight line between overpopulation and dictatorship (to preserve control) and goes on to lament that we are "doing nothing systematic about our breeding," resulting in populations "of biologically poorer quality." That position is loaded with value judgement and subjectivity. The "biologically deficient person" can contribute to society or can produce offspring who can. Biologically healthy individuals can be and are threats to the good of the whole. Limiting sheer numbers to help preserve individual liberty is one thing, but picking the breeding partners moves Huxley into the very world he is concerned about.

Although I have always enjoyed fantasy, this book made me begin to wonder if I truly am a fan of fantasy. Why? Perhaps it is because I want to say that in this book the "magic" of the world was too much in-your-face. That seems like a contradiction coming from a devoted fantasy reader. But when the main character says things like "I need someone with magic to solve my problem for me," I feel like I’m reading something a little too childish. [1] That was strike one. Strike two went against characterization. At first I thought I’d see some complex characterization, but it ended up fizzling away. There is a small pontification near the beginning when Zedd [2] tries to explain to Richard that "bad" people really don't think of themselves as bad: they see justification for their actions. At the time Richard didn't understand how "bad" people could consider themselves good. This was a good setup for complex villains with compelling back-stories, as well as a potential character arc as Richard learned to understand and appreciate the villains. Unfortunately, that is not how I saw the story play out. [3] And since I’ve been using a baseball metaphor, I’ll call a foul ball on the philosophical discussions. There were attempts to lay down utilitarian view points and debates throughout the book, including a common theme that the needs of the "many" should outweigh the needs of the "few". But I found these were usually too simplistic to really be worth discussing in any detail. If you are reading this for the philosophy, you’ll be disappointed. What really turned me off this story though was near the end when the plot took a very dark turn. (view spoiler) In addition to the fact that it was dark and violent, which isn't something I really look for, it also somehow managed to be boring and repetitive. So that leaves the count at two strikes and one foul ball, but I’m going to end the baseball metaphor there. It was a fun book, but I’m not recommending it beyond that. As this is Goodkind's first novel, perhaps more can be expected from its sequels. ---- [1] This is not an actual quote, but it is very close to an actual quote. [2] The names in this review have NOT been changed to protect the innocent. They are fictional for crying out loud. [3] This point is highly debatable. (view spoiler)
a very nice and interesting novel .

I read it with the joy and laughter but also with the sympathy that comes with painful recognition that lies too close for comfort. All the foibles and delights of Oxford life are presented here, and it was great fun re-living them through this book. Ulimately though the book was cause for rather painful reflection: had I really made the most of my time in Oxford, was I truly accepted? Was my three years just a catalogue of wasted opportunities? My verdict: a welcome addition to the vast corpus of literature on Oxford, from a much different perspective. I picked this up quite randomly at a tiny bookshop at Tanglin Mall on my lunch break. Upon seeing the rather brilliantly hilarious title and reading blurb, I immediately bought it. It definitely made my day.

I picked this up in Bangkok--and then I left it out in the rain all night in Barbados. Oops.
A fun, light read.

As individual as grief may be, Lewis here offers a genuine and realistic glimpse into that intricate experience.

我爱,爱,喜欢这本书。 它对成年人和儿童都一样好,尤其是对爱犬者。 许多人生的教训,要学习,而不是对孩子。 一百万颗星就此。
