not my favorite book. i was almost in waves: at certain points i really loved the book and then at certain times it was just bleh. it wouldnt be a book that i would recommend to all of my friends to read. just like movies and believe that at certain times in my life i begin to understand and understand certain stories more. i believe that this would be a book the i would like to revisit in about 40 years, but i didnt feel that it pertained to me at the moment.
I kind of read this - started it, didn't like it. Returned it to the library.

I read this book for a book club I recently joined. Amazing. It isn't something I would have picked up otherwise, but am very glad I did. Compelling characters; interesting story; educational all around. I will definitely pick up more of Courtenay's work.

A true, modern story of the post-apocalyptic megalopolis. POWER The first section of this book disturbed me more than anything I can remember reading. The author takes us with him as he moves back to his birth city of Bombay, and we feel the disorientation and culture shock as he discoverers the ways it has been "ruined." I knew nothing about Bombay before reading this book, and the process of becoming acquainted with it through these chapters was often dizzying, sometimes stretched the limits of my belief, and more than once made me feel nauseous. Suketu sprinkles his narrative with the many names and phrases of the local cultures, sometimes with translations and sometimes without; this only adds to the feeling of being immersed in an increasingly alien and unknowable world. There are descriptions of poverty, torture, meaningless violence, bureaucratic nightmares, pervasive corruption and upside-down justice -- in short, every type of societal clusterfuck imaginable -- that carves a meandering path between farcical and horrifying. In these realms even the names we give to people and places are illusory, constantly shifting. In his straightforward recounting of many run-ins with the people and systems of his city, Suketu paints a picture of a world gone far beyond sanity yet somehow continuing according to its own tenuous rules.

Film/sound editor extraordinaire Walter Murch supplies the stories, acclaimed author Michael Ondaatje asks the questions in this fine book chock-full of behind-the-scenes knowledge and technique. Murch already shared ideas that are now part and parcel of the art of film editing in his book 'In the Blink of an Eye,' but this book gets more personal and delves into the relationships WM shared with other LA luminaries of the late 60s/early 70s like Coppola and Lucas. It's fascinating to learn more about the genesis of great works like 'Apocalypse Now,' 'The Godfather,' 'The Conversation,' and more. A fine and breezy read.

I like both these authors a great deal, but I was a leeetle disappointed in this book. I'd only recommend it if you're fond of Pratchett or Gaiman.
