Sweet, light-hearted and fun. I enjoyed reading this book and absorbing the British slang and writing style. Entirely predictible, with a disappointing ending that clearly left the author the option to write a sequel/develop a series. Overall, a cute book.

This is Hardy and it is bleak. There's almost a sick pleasure one can derive from watching so attractive a character as the large-hearted, brilliant and dedicated Jude struck over and over by the sledgehammers, or perhaps whips, of life, society, women, and senseless tragedy - but, as with most S&M, the pleasure fades as the audience realizes the point is not the attractiveness of the character in the lead role, but the amount of pain the secondary characters can inflict on him or her. Is this a novel of rage against society for crushing those it should embrace? Is it a tirade against the Judes of this world for allowing themselves to remain, save perhaps in their final moments, ignorant of the courage that can be derived from a life of conviction? Did Hardy write this on a whim, trying to outdo the ending of King Lear? Maybe. Maybe. But whatever theory I can come up with pales against the monumental pain that accumulates on the shoulders of the protagonists. This book gets three stars because I can't bring myself to say I like it. I could have gone my life without reading it - I don't need any more reminders of how much and how deeply it can suck to be an idealist in this modern age. But there's some power here, in Jude, even if it is too timid to really show itself. That sets it apart from the other twos and threes on my list, like the vapid fiction of Paul Auster, and makes it worth a reading if one wants to see if one can scale the monument.

Suzie's friend Mary recommended this book. I bought Melanie a copy and when Randy came home from tour he wanted to read it. I accidentally got into the book by just reading a couple chapters - after that I was hooked. Great story from all perspectives - nothing is held back!
Good read. Well written .

I picked up this book because I was drawn into the online game that was a marketing device for the book. While the book was interesting, it wasn't interesting enough for me to remember the plot very long after finishing the book. All I do remember is that it wasn't anything like what I was expecting, given the nature of the game I'd been playing leading up to the release of the book.
** spoiler alert ** I keep reading Hornby's novels despite how much I dislike his open endings. It irritates me that, at the end, you just have to trust that Hornby has told you all you needed to know about the characters to predict what they'll do. But I also love it. I can imagine Anne is going to pack everything and get the hell out of Gooleness. That she'll take the risk and go to the States to be with Tucker. Tucker is the first male character in a Hornby novel that I like, don't know why...
