I'm not sure how to describe how I feel about this book...there were no tears, but it was an emotional read nonetheless and definitely made me think. I'm just kind of numb right now, honestly.

The book was amazingly descriptive, and an absolutley horrifying look at working and living conditions for immigrants in the very early 20th century. Very depressing, and a slow read for me, but not Jen. Jen reads faster so she won't be stuck in depressing book land for weeks on end like me.
Re-read of another edition, rated more highly, 27/1/15: Frankly, I was too young to really appreciate this book when I first read it. I realise that now. It's often said that die-hard fans of The Lord of the Rings will find much to enjoy in The Silmarillion. I'm not sure that's true. They might but equally they might not - they're two very different styles of book, as different from each other as The Hobbit is from either. This is The Greek Myths and The Golden Fleece to The Lord of the Rings's The Iliad and The Odyssey . The scope and ambition of this work of fiction is breathtaking, as J.R.R. Tolkien seeks to create the mythology of an entire world. That means beginning with its creation - not of Middle Earth, which is just the part featured in those earlier novels, but of an entire planet. With a world formed and a pantheon established heroes are introduced and their exploits sketched. These do, then, provide some context and depth to the more widely read of Tolkien's fiction even if the differing style means that those who enjoy one will not necessarily enjoy the other. This is a masterclass in creating a fictional universe and goes some way to explaining just why the author's many imitators have fallen short of his success. Tolkien's use of Germanic and Celtic myth in his world is no secret but his scholarship is greater even than that and it's hard to believe that anyone but a professor of Mediaeval Literature would have had the patience and breadth of knowledge to execute such a plan. The heroic cycles here are reminiscent of The Song of Roland, Beowulf and the Edda. Those that enjoy high fantasy and quest tales might not like this, conversely, those that enjoy ancient myths might well find much they like here.

Very close to perfection. The choice of title is enough to recommend the book. It's the story of a man collecting his family history--centered on a mining engineer's family and his travels from Leadville, CO to old Mexico and Idaho. Stegner's rendering of Mexico was absolutely stunning. I re-read that chapter from time to time and it inevitably draws me in to reading the entire book again. Stegner touches on the friction between social classes, the moral bankruptcy of the late 19th century mining industry and the tumble of debris that inevitably stops at a fixed "angle of repose."

I loved this book! set in the 1960s It is the story of a young white woman who writes a book about the stories the black maids tell about their lives taking care of their white families. I didn't want to stop reading until I was done....
man alive. dark, stressful, heartbreaking, and endearing. at times, needed to suspend disbelief/skepticism, but still loved it and would read it all over again. well done, emma donoghue.
It was in between good and just ok. Cute story but not overly engaging. It was fine.

This was a quick read. More of a parenting book than memoir, which is what I read it for (the memoir, not parenting. Do not need that yet!). It is very entertaining. Soleil had a very unconvential, yet fascinating upbringing. And a happy childhood, especially being a child star. She is very insightful as a mom, too, I think. I recommend if you are a Punky Brewster fan (or wondered what happened to her) or a parent or aunt or uncle or child caregiver.
It might have helped that my expectations weren't high when I started this. I thought the story was perhaps a more realistic look at personal lives affected by the Civil War that epics which focus on the glory of war; an oxymoron in itself.

Slow start to this one for me - I wasn't into comics as a child, so it took me until about page 250 to get into the book. But the friendship of Sammy and Joe, the way they come of age, fall in love, live through hardships, totally caught me and I finished the rest of the 400 pags in about 3 days. It was definitely worth it. Read it!
