Great read
Second volume of Dresden languages professor Klemperer's secret diary which he kept from 1933-1945. He was spared deportation because he was married to an Aryan woman, but they were still deprived of their home, job, books, typewriter, radio, newspapers, etc. A fascinating view of the war from ground level and from those kept in the dark about what was happening, except for rumors. Klemperer and his wife amazingly survived the war (and the destruction of Dresden). His second wife compiled and deciphered the many pages of his diary that were secretly kept by Aryan friends throughout the war and published them in German in 1995 and in English in 1999.

Character development in "Storm Front" isn't quite as strong as it would become later in the series that this book inaugurated, but even here, Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden is good company. Jim Butcher's tightly-plotted tale of a careworn professional wizerd trying to keep his little corner of the world nailed down while things come apart elsewhere kept me up late, and the confrontations in the book are set pieces written in fine cinematic style. You'll swear you can feel the thunder, see the purple sorcerer's fire, and hear the jukebox crash into a night club wall. Harry's sense of right and wrong is the most appealing thing about him, and I like that he almost never relies exclusively on magic. It's no mean feat to use locale effectively, or to come up with a character who is simultaneously vulnerable and powerful, but Jim Butcher manages to do both of those things. He's also good with little touches, as when Harry notes that he has a godmother, and that she is "perhaps inevitably" a fairy. The Dresden Files are not for children (murders in this book and its sequels are not sugarcoated), but they're unexpectedly moral stories. After having read two of them at the time I originally posted this review and more since then, I'd recommend anything in the series to fantasy fans. Jim Butcher is an author you can trust.

Alone on an island. How will she survive? She is a young teenager. Has she learned enough from what her father and her people taught her? This was a very good book. A very well written story. You will learn a few things about different animals in it too. Like the Otters. Really enjoyed this book.

An effective telling of the moods and events around the murder of Emmett Till, as seen through a fictional white teen who is growing up and learning to see the world through his own eyes. Recommended for middle school and up for several reasons -- Till's death, though not described in detail until the trial, is brutal an very hard to take. Also, the theme of adults complicit in violent acts and lying (as a community) in a court of law will need some discussion. This book was very readable and is an important one to keep on library shelves.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the two volumes of the Fables series that I have completely read thusfar. This volume in particular was very gritty and surreal, watching all of those beloved Fairy Tales that I have grown up loving, be so demented, mean and horrible. I am currently on the 3rd volume and I'm not digging that as much. We'll see where it takes me!
Liked this one - what a feisty lady!! And a little depressing to see that a perfectly good mom can still have a wackjob for a kid.
This book is so boring, and predictable. Not worth reading, even for the biggest Garcia Marquez fan.
