A fascinating story about an absolutely crazy family. Loved it. Shocking, but at the same time believable.

You wake up in the hospital and can’t remember anything. Someone tells you what have happened and who you are. You even can’t remember what you looked like because now you have a different face because of fire where your face, hair and hands got burned. That is how the story starts. Then the author takes the reader by hand and shows him many different ways how the girl could end in this situation (meanwhile for the reader it is only the beginning). Every of personages had its own plan and it is hard to say who won and who was trapped. Even after the last page it is hard to understand who the winner is in this great swindle. Most probably there is none. He that mischief hatches...

Mostly seems like a collection of radio firsts. I have to admit - I was surprised that Rush Limbaugh got his start at local-to-me radio stations.

If nothing else the illustrations are awesome! You can't beat Ted Haggard (pre-scandal) on a billboard trying to french-kiss an American eagle as the Dukes of Hazzard General Lee is seen tearing by down below. Yee-Haw! Allelulia! Praise Jesus, American Evangelical style!

When I finished this book, my first reaction was 4 stars, but the longer I dwell on it, the more I like it, so I gave it 5 stars. I really loved this book because it kind-of ended up being one of those refreshing, life-inspiring, somewhat life-changing (or perspective-changing anyway) books... which is what I least expected from this novel. I always love being pleasantly surprised (who doesn't?). It kind-of had the intrigue of a good mystery story, too. The storyline: Alice hits her head, wakes up & thinks she's 29. Actually, she's 39. She can't remember anything from the last 10 years. She thinks she's shy, a little chubby, in love with her husband, and pregnant with her first child. Actually, she's outgoing & feisty (possibly even bitchy), skinny, in the middle of a divorce with her idiot husband, and has three children she doesn't know. As bits and pieces of memories come back to her, and as the "older Alice" pops out every now and then (like when she snaps at her kids), she puts them together with a "young Alice" perspective, realizing that she doesn't really like who she has become. It becomes a powerful story of forgiveness and understanding things from different points of view. If you read this one, be sure to read the Epilogue.

Friends kept telling me to read this book, and I resisted. I think some part of me thought that dragons in the Napoleonic Wars would be cutesy. But this book isn't cutesy, though it is occasionally cute. In addition to being a gripping and well-written adventure story, it's apparent that Novik has given a lot of thought to the implications of humans keeping sentient dragons and using them in warfare. It made me laugh. It made me cry. It has dragons. What more could you want from a good book?
