I bought this book thinking it would be an easy read; easy it was not. Not because her writing was so thought provoking, but mostly because she comes off as an imbecile who thinks she never does anything wrong. You had to take everything she was saying with a grain of salt, and I think a memoir is more about being honest than making yourself look faultless. The only thing I do like about the book is her side of the election, pregnancy and her crazy baby daddy.
A terrible beauty is born.

I have read many books about The Holocast but none has touched me the way "Skeletons At The Feast" did. Author Chris Bohjalian writes about a family from Prussia who could not believe that all the stories told were true...they were wealthy and thought they somehow would be spared. Their land was not German but suddenly was declared German so they were thrown in a war they never even imagined they would be in and for a cause they did not believe in. They find themselves fleeing and gather along the way a Scottish POW, and a Jewish prison camp escapee, and 2 women. Their flight reveals a desperate view of the people during World War II-- those who had to fight to stay alive and flee the wrath of Hitler's army and also leave behind their men who were forced to fight for Hitler's cause. I found this to be one of my favorite books of all time. Chris Bohjalian is such a wonderful down to earth author and he promises a sequel but says it has not formed in his mind. I assure you all of his novels are also worth reading.
First cookbook to ever make me crack up. Out loud. In public.

A very readable book about the global virtual economy and its foundation in the real world. One of my favorite discoveries in it was Doctorow's discussion of what he referred to as the Coase cost (pp. 228-232), the basic premise of which is that virtually all of what we do is collaborative so that we must, in effect, pay a tax for the time, energy, resources it takes to make this collaboration possible. Doctorow then goes on to tie this to power and open source software. He suggests that big institutions (e.g. governments, corporations, etc) can overcome high Coase costs and that open systems and networks can overcome this hurdle. Quote: "The fact is, almost everything you do is collaborative. Somewhere out there, someone else had a hand in it. And part of the cost of what you are doing is spent on making sure that you're coordinating right." (p. 229) "[Value of the movie] - [Cost of getting your friends together to see it] = [Net value of an evening out]" (p. 230)

I'm currently reading this book by Patricia Cornwell after not wanting to read the 3 she wrote before this involving Kay Scarpetta and all her cronies. They got such bad ratings and I had so many other things to read, that I did not want to bother with them. That being said, it took me a bit to get acquainted with where she was at this stage in her life. She's married to Benton (when did that happen)..apparently a book ago Marino sexually assaulted her while he was intoxicated and she just did escape rape. Lots of shocks that I would have known if I had read her last few Scarpetta novels. But this one so far is pleasant enough and a far cry from the usual suspense murder books I like to read or the paranormal romance books I read alot.

Good intense plot. I jumped in and read this one without having read the previous ones. I will definitely read some more. ..
Yet another book by Jared Diamond that I started, enjoyed, but never finished . . .

Twenty-five years ago Chantal Day and Flynn McKenna were young and in love. When Chantal's cosmetics business goes belly-up she is forced to pack her bags and return to the small-town where she grew up. And Flynn now a widower with a twelve-year old daughter is her neighbour. This is a fairly short but well-written contemporary with a slight suspense. The hero and heroine were both likable, and the character of Ella, Flynn's daughter, was delightfully written without the pouty angst that some writers think typifies all teens and pre-teens.
