Now I know why everyone who has read this book has loved it! Delightful, funny, touching, I loved that it was so intricate and well-structured and yet the characters were so alive despite the presence of so many. I also liked the fact that although the book is about the effect of World War II on England and Guernsey in particular, it was not a depressing story. What saddened me most was learning that the author, Mary Ann Shaffer, died soon after publication. I would have loved to have seen what else she could have come up with!

Not nearly as good as Lahiri's other book of short stories, which I loved. Considering the many intricate themes that the novel wants to explore, I think it was rather poorly developed. I didn't find the attempt to connect with Nikolai Gogol (the 'namesake' of the protagonist) very meaningful, despite my unfamiliarity with Gogol's works. However, as with most Indian novels in English, I'm always struck by elements that I'm intimately familiar with, as a 'native' (for instance, the fact that the wife would never address the husband by first name, but something else like aye, shunso? - which, as Lahiri explains, "translates roughly as 'Are you listening to me?'"). And I have to admit that the story of the parents during their early days in Cambridge was quite powerful and moving (if only because it strongly evoked memories of my own parents' experience as migrant professionals in another country far away from home and family). Incidentally, a friend also told me that these were the only scenes in the movie that he liked, at all. I picked it up from my local used bookstore to read before the movie was released - but I haven't seen the movie yet!

Just OK. Not as good as the rest of the series so far. Not as much action. However, Miss Climpson was in fine form and has quickly become one of my favorite characters.

This book, and every one in the series, is absolutely hysterical. Don't miss it.
I thought it was a pretty good book. Right now I'm planning on reading some of the other books in the series.
Had a great beginning and end. The sections about POW camp were of course horrific, and seemingly interminable. But all in all, a very inspiring story.
