If you are a fan of the Bartimaeus trilogy you will definitely enjoy The Ring of Solomon. This book deals much more with Bartimaeus and his adventures than the previous books and less with the surrounding plots by corrupted magicians. The Ring of Solomon is set in Jerusalem in 950 B.C. Remember how Bartimaeus always brags about talking to Solomon? Well, now we find out in which way he did. There are mainly two reasons I didn't give this book 5 stars. First is that the story and the ending is rather standard with few surprises. Second is that I feel Bartimaeus is portrayed more as the unbeatable hero, in contrast to the first books where he would really mess up some times. All in all, this book will appeal younger readers more than the original trilogy (including the beautiful cover).
A woman scientist engaged in studying snakes spends considerable time in the Congo and has some great tales to tell!!

The first half of this book was much better than the second half. By the second half, I was skimming. I did learn a lot about Russian history and it was worth the time I spent on it.

Pale Demon is by far the BEST book of Kim Harrison's "Hallow" series! Rachel Morrigan needs to make it to San Francisco to make the annual Witch Convention. If she doesn't make it to her trial, she will be a shunned witch who will be imprisoned in Alcatraz or get a lobotomy. In addition, she needs to be pardoned or she will miss her older brother’s wedding. Despite her insistence that she can simply get on a plane, Rachel is unable to make her flight (due to her current “shunned, black witch” status) and needs an alternate route. Trent, a local money-man, murder, politician suggests that Rachel help him get to the West Coast. His thinking is that it will be safer for the both of them. The mix of vampire, witch, and pixy, along with Trent, all in a car on a road trip makes for a great story! The characters continue to develop in complexity. I can’t wait until the next book is published!

Ever wanted to try a new restaurant but lost the patience to wait for your friends' schedules to open up so you end up going by yourself? And then you go to that restaurant for the first time and realize that you're the only one who is dining by yourself after looking around the dining area? That odd mixture of liberation mixed with total self-consciousness is how I felt the first time I read Beckett. This was my intro to him and I loved every moment of it.
This is a rare sort of book in my opinion. Most of the time the first book in a series is the best, and then if you're lucky the rest of the books don't suck. I thought the exact opposite happened here. City of Glass was better than both of the previous books. If the first book had been this good, I would have been more excited to continue reading the series!

I only read this book because I promised my favorite 10 year old that I would. It was... good; probably would've liked it more if I'd never read a Harry Potter book.
One of the first freebies I grabbed at Amazon for my Kindle (long before I owned the actual unit). I've read the Last Light series by Terri Blackstock and really enjoyed them, and this one was no different. Christian murder mystery set in South Louisiana around Mardi Gras, so perfect for me, at this time of year :) It wasn't overly hard to figure out, but it was well written and woven in well, so she always had me guessing just a little between two possible villains.
