The latest in a series of books by Tolkien which were little more than sketches for his Trilogy. It's been fleshed out by his son, and the work shows. While the language is much the same, it doesn't have the beauty and purpose of the earlier books. It's decent as a short, self-contained novel, and did it not bear the "sacred" name of Tolkien, might even be great. But it falls a bit short of the master, unfinished as it is. Still, like looking at the chalk sketches and studies of an Old Master, this allows you insight into works that previously seemed miraculous. It's mind-boggling the amount of work and planning that went in to the Trilogy.

While I did not enjoy it as much as the first book, it was still entertaining. My four stars is because of the dialogue being worse in this book I thought. Also, the back and front of the book were made of a different cardboard than the first book. The first omnibus was shiny and this was not. The paper on omnibus 2 seems thinner and my book came bent which could be to do with the lesser quality card. The error on the second book back cover was fixed on this. The art in the book was superb and the pages are fantastic, as the first book was! Looking forward to reading book 3! The story is a little disappointing as this book finishes all the cards she captures. Which makes for about 10 overall, instead of the large amount of 52 in the anime.

I was really hoping this would be better than her other book, but again, it was just okay. Entertaining and creative, but it's just not very convincing. It was just missing something...can't say what exactly. Fun to read once I guess, but won't keep this on my shelf.

"The NEW Year of Mystery" continues!... I enjoyed Simon Beckett's debut novel "Chemistry of Death", so I had high hopes for this sequel. I'm glad to say that it did more than lived up to expectations - forensic anthropologist Dr. David Hunter is an interesting and engaging central character, the plot/mystery is strong and unpredictable, the supporting characters are more original and developed, and the pace is great. Simon Beckett is quickly finding his way onto my "favorite authors" list, and I can't wait to see what comes next for Dr. David Hunter!

Written in 1895, The Red Badge Of Courage tells the story of Henry Fleming, a young man who joins the Union army during the American Civil War. Before his first engagement he suffers great anxiety about how he will acquit himself in the heat of battle. When the moment comes he quickly becomes convinced that the Confederate Army has overwhelmed the Union troops and flees. After a period of wandering aimlessly, he joins a group of wounded men heading away from the battlefield. However, he quarrels with another soldier who hits him on the head with a rifle butt. Now that Henry has an obvious wound, he is able to rejoin his regiment and everyone assumes he sustained his injury in battle. Subsequently, he fights bravely and wins the praise of his commanding officer. I found the style of this novel very difficult to engage with. The narrator always seemed to be at one remove from his characters, describing them in a journalistic rather than a novelistic fashion. Perhaps this is explained by the fact that Crane was a journalist before turning to fiction. There is very little plot and the real substance of the book is a series of extended mediations on the chaotic reality of war and on the highly subjective notion of courage. All this is achieved through a focus on the thoughts of the protagonist, who is not a particularly articulate or self-aware individual. This naturally presents the author with a challenge but it was one that I did not feel convinced he had completely risen to. All in all I found this a disappointing read.

Ugh. With just about 50 pages to go, I simply cannot read it anymore. I have spent the last 200 or so pages with my mind wandering, so I don't even know what is happening anymore. A disappointing read--I can't understand why so many people thought it was so great...?
