This series is an anglophile's daydream. Well-off American widow moves to England and finds wonderful cottage in relatively unspoiled cathedral/university town. She has charming neighbors, wizardly gardener, inherits cat and cottage garden, strikes up romance with non-aristocratic upper class Detective Superintendent, is liked by everyone, is more British than the British, and has a penchant for hats. She is a whiz at detecting, charmingly incompetent behind the wheel of a car, and in economically depressed Britain, finds a job. Ah, to day dream so well! The murder is appropriately tragic, the villains appropriately villainous, and the ending appropriately neat. It is a pleasant day's reading, with no thought required. Perfect with a cup of tea and a plate of cookies. Re-reading May 2015 ~ Still an enjoyable light read. And I'd forgotten exactly which suspect did it, so that was nice too. First read in August 2011

The authors have cute names. There is wacky speculation on intelligent spores from outer space. It makes growing mushrooms look hard, particularly considering that these fungi are often said to grow on cow poop. Cow poop which doesn't have to go through an autoclave or be sprayed with lysol, incidentally.

An autobiography of a man's childhood that in our modern eyes has a strong element of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn in it except it's true. Every intelligent teenager should read this to understand something about his/her country and where it came from. I look forward to sometime giving it to my granddaughter.

Wow... am really surprised that I didn't really like that at all! Very unusual, but I actually thought the movie was MUCH better. I was really disappointed by the book... perhaps my expectations were too high after I balled my eyes out watching the movie. I just found that I didn't get that emotional connection with the characters, like I did in the movie. The movie was was so well done and the book was quite different. Usually the movie misses things that were in the book, but I found that the other way around. Never mind!

I'm actually not even really sure what to think of this book :/ It was well written and the basic idea behind it was good but it seemed like nothing really happened in it. I kept thinking that something exciting was going to happen but it never did and yet I still kind of liked it and I still felt a bit of stockholme syndrome for Ty myself! Overall I liked the basic idea for this story and the characters are well developed but I don't think the author made it as compelling as it could have been and now I'm left confused as to how many stars to give this book because while I did like this book I was disappointed by it so I think I'm just going to leave my rating blank! :/
This started out kind of slow I thought, but about half way through it really picked up and got more exciting and dangerous! I love Trella's feistiness! A great end to the story.

I really liked this book - for many reasons. There is SO much in here of Americana that has gone unknown for some reason or other but should not have. And Larson's book is extremely well put together to infuse the exciting historical triumphs and tribulations with chilling fear and foreboding...even though we know what is about to happen. Without giving away too much - just the amount of American culture, inventions and more - that were invented for or inspired by this monumental national "fair" is astounding and make it an extremely enlightening and enjoyable read. This should be on a must-read list for any student of American History, Architecture, or even criminal investigators... not to mention for those of us who just love the amazing mixed with the macabre.
I read this while back in High School. It's absolutely on my "to read again" list.

I think this book is EXTREMELY important given our lifestyles today. I raised my kids with camping and hiking but also technology. The book's premise that children need to revel in nature in order to have a full upbringing is valid. This is not a preachy book at all.
