I enjoyed this biography of Galileo. His daughter was placed in a convent at a young age, she was a smart and capable woman and the two of them were very close. His letters to her do not survive, but her letters do and are interspersed throughout the biography. It forms a touching background to the difficulties Galileo faced for his celestial discoveries that disproved the commonly held (i.e. Church supported) Aristotelian understanding of the planets and stars. I finished this book with a new appreciation for separation of church and state, and freedom for scientific discovery that was not enjoyed in Galileo's lifetime. I would recommend this book to Carole because I think she will enjoy reading how closely tied church and science were in the 1600s.

It's very sad. If you like happy endings please don't read this. If you like stories that are true and real, please do read this. You have to like Hemingway to like his novels, and sometimes it is easier to just read his short stories, which can be more interesting and more fast-paced. "Today Is Friday" is surprising and very illuminating for those of religious pursuits (that's kind of a spoiler, sorry).
This was an OK read for me. I liked the idea of the story itself, but the sex scenes were not appealing to me...too clinical? in its word usage or something.
American Rose, a Nation Laid bare: The Life and Times of Gypsy Rose Lee, by Karen Abbott, narrated by Bernadette Dunn, produced by Random House Audio, downloaded from audible.com. The publisher’s note says it as well as I can, but I’ll just add here that Bernadette Dunn as the narrator did a wonderful job with this book, which involved from its major characters, a lot of hyperbole and bragging, which she carried off like a professional carnival barker. Publisher’s Note: This is the story of America's coming-of-age - told through the extraordinary life of Gypsy Rose Lee and the world she survived and conquered.America in the Roaring Twenties. Vaudeville was king. Talking pictures were only a distant flicker. Speakeasies beckoned beyond dimly lit doorways; money flowed fast and free. But then, almost overnight, the Great Depression leveled everything. When the dust settled, Americans were primed for a star who could distract them from grim reality and excite them in new, unexpected ways. Enter Gypsy Rose Lee, a strutting, bawdy, erudite stripper who possessed a preternatural gift for delivering exactly what America needed. With her superb narrative skills and eye for compelling detail, Karen Abbott brings to vivid life an era of ambition, glamour, struggle, and survival. Using exclusive interviews and never-before-published material, she vividly delves into Gypsy's world, including her intensely dramatic triangle relationship with her sister, actress June Havoc, and their formidable mother, Rose, a petite but ferocious woman who seduced men and women alike and literally killed to get her daughters on the stage.American Rose chronicles their story, as well as the story of the four scrappy and savvy showbiz brothers from New York City who would pave the way for Gypsy Rose Lee's brand of burlesque. Modeling their shows after the glitzy, daring reviews staged in the theaters of Paris, the Minsky brothers relied on grit, determination, and a few tricks that fell just outside the law - and they would shape, and ultimately transform, the landscape of American entertainment. The author does a good job of showing us that Gypsy Rose Lee always re-shaped her own life to suit her current needs, and that it’s hard to know what stories are true and what are apocryphal.
Great ideas, but way over my head! Had to put it away....

What can I say? A classic!
Highly recommended. This is a simple book, in all the best sense of the word, about a man facing his past, his present, and his future. The protagonist, Manny, is the manager of a Red Lobster restaurant, and the book takes place on its closing day. O'Nan writes well - we see Manny's inherent honesty, and the fact that he cares about doing a good job, even though it's the last day. The other characters are well drawn, as well. An easy read at 140 pages. And anyone who has ever worked at a chain restaurant will just appreciate the attention to detail (O'Nan supposedly got a Red Lobster manager's handbook from Ebay).

Hard to read, not suggested to the faint of heart - check into what it's about before you give it a shot, but it's an excellent book.
