I wanted so much more from this book. The Supreme Court’s complicity towards racism in the 19th Century is covered – albeit in less detail – in law school, but the book never ventures beyond hinting at an elevated legal and political analysis of the subject. If anything, the book strikes me as a survey intended for a general audience – except that the style and tone are more suited to a legal audience. I relied on my own study of the law to fill in some of the blanks in the analysis, and I have no idea how someone without a legal background would fare. In short, it’s difficult to pinpoint who is intended as the target audience: it’s sufficiently rooted in legal style to be off putting to those without legal training while offering little more than a detailed review for most attorneys. Mr. Goldstone also operates on a number of assumptions – which are entirely necessary to keep the book at a tidy 200 pages – except he does not make those controlled factors clear from the start. This is a decent book – and I wish more people were familiar with this period in the Supreme Court’s history – but I found it more frustrating than enlightening. Not recommended.

I enjoy everything that Banana Yoshimoto puts out, but I enjoyed this a little less than the others.
I love the Little House books and on any given day, I would name any of the 9 volumes my favourite. On this given day, however, I'll name The Long Winter as my favourite. Hard times, families pulling together, irrepressible hope, a Christmas miracle and, of course, Almanzo Wilder saving the day with his brother Royal. Rose-tinted? Of course! And I love it all the more for it.
The setting of this story, about a woman's struggle to raise her drowned sister's daughter in rural 1940s Wisconsin, is interesting and the characters are compelling enough to finish the book. However, astute readers will be able to predict exactly what is going to happen in the entire book by about page 15. I am personally not a big fan of books where a central plotline hinges on the misunderstanding by one character of another's attempt to confess to a lie, but otherwise the story was ok. The time period makes it an interesting read, and the mother-daughter dynamic between the aunt and niece is also compelling.

The Brothers is an interpretation of what might have happened during the great war in heaven. It was a time where families were torn apart and brothers literally fought brothers. In this particular book, there is a family of four, Elizabeth, Sam, Luke, and Ammon. When Beth, Ammon and Luke find that their brother Sam is missing they fear for the worst. Has he joined the dark side? can he still see the light? Now the children have to fight their own fears such as their fears of birth, pain, and also their fear of losing their brother and family. I really enjoyed this book and i think that chris stewart did a fantastic job writing it. I really enjoyed the way that everyone was portrayed and it really gets you thinking. However i do warn that you need to take in the fact that this is a fictional book based on some fact but you can't take everything in there as gospel knowledge/truth. I just say before you go reading it, be ready to know what is truth and what is not. Again i thoroughly enjoyed the book. :)
A very imaginative story and deliciously well written with characters so endearing and recognizable (esp strong, independent women!) that you don't want them to go away. Plus a few sea monsters (lake monsters?) and ghosts to add to the metaphorical richness of the story's layers.
