A heartbreaking story of a girl in Switzerland who is mistreated by her father, then by many people around her. She overcomes her trials and pushes forward to forge a life in the new world, but ends up in a roller-coaster life filled with hardship and anger. I found this a difficult read because there was more bitterness than joy in this journey of Marta's life, and I didn't walk away from it feeling any resolution or happiness for the family. There is one more book in the series, so maybe I will then.

I read this book last year, and absolutely fell in love with it. Cynthia Ozick definitely has a way with words. This novel is about an unhappy jewish female lawyer, who accidentally creates a Golem (the jewish legend of man made of mud with the hebrew word for truth carved on his forehead) that enables her to become Mayor. This book is crazy and absurd yet still grounded, interestingly enough. It makes the troubles experienced with a live-in Golem almost laughable and quotidien. I highly recommend it.

First book I read outside of school. Yes, I was very lazy and illiterate
don't think he wrote a single mediocre book
The other great book by VN, the story works because it creates a character who wants to be more important than he is and because the framing device of marginally talented editor toying with and appropriating the last epic poem of a mythic Great American Poet. Grand adventure, intricate and lilting prose, but without quite the heart of =Lolita=.
So I finally finished the patternmaster series. Not really a series, as there's no big finale but all the books are linked. I have heard that Butler didn't like this book and didn't want it to be printed again. I'm not sure why. The only problem I had with it was the changing narrator. She went from 1st person with a human, to 1st person with an alien, and then to 3rd person. It was a bit jarring at times. Sometimes she would label the chapter with the narrators name but then she would change to 3rd person with just a couple lines of space. As with her other books, this is sturdy work, well written and harsh. No hi-tech gadgets but some pretty cool aliens with a fully developed culture that reminded me of -Speaker for the Dead- in their alien-ness. The difference is that she writes shorter stories so her characters aren't as well developed as Card. So I like her stuff but it hasn't blown me away yet. Maybe the Xenogenisis trilogy will, I'm going to try to read that later this year.
This book was OK. I found it not as in depth as her other stories on the royal court. I think mainly because she wrote it from Hannah's view. It just seemed disjointed to me. I did enjoy looking up and learning more about Queen Bloody Mary though and as always it makes me shake in horror to hear about what they did to women during childbirth back then. ICK!
I almost hated to give this a two since Rebecca seems to be a good writer. It is just that living in France seemed to her like she moved to the next county. She became obsessed with the old lady next door and seemed to spend very little time exploring France and the different culture. At least she figured out that wearing white tennis shoes would be weird in France. I bet she was happy to get back home.
This is the final of the Surrender to Destiny series and a great final book. We are still in Baltimore during the war of 1812 and this time Cassandra is needing help to provide for her family. Her father has died and her brothers are missing after going to Canada to fight. Her mother has no concept of managing money and its left to Cassandra to find a way to provide for her family. Luke has his own demons to fight and is the town rouge. He has a ship but its needing repairs. When a encounter happens they end up partners when Cassandra hires Luke as a privateer. As mentioned in the blurb Luke ends up being blackmailed by the British and this leads to some interesting happenings. I do love this story and the way we learn about history. Cassandra is a strong, determined lady which can sometimes get her into trouble. Luke is caring a lot of guilt from something that happened when he was a child but children often find a way to blame themselves for things that are not there fault. I love how Mary Lu deals with this issue and shows why Luke feels like he does. Great read and I really wish there were going to be more in this series.
This is a lengthy book about the legendary racehorse, Seabiscuit. I enjoyed the history of racing, the information about the owners and jockeys, and just how amazing this horse was. I didn't love how it ended fairly abruptly. With all the detail that went into the back history, I would have liked more information about what happened to the characters later in life.
