This is one my my favorites. I was so intrigued and amazed at this virtually unknown part of old world history. I could not put it down. It led me to rent a sub-titled movie about one of the most popular castratis, Faranelli. Very interesting

I'm only halfway through, but I've learned that Frasier is quite the madman, full of pop culture references (almost more fun now that they're outdated), unapologetically letting Flashman run wild through his books. I've heard that there are objections to Flashman's total lack of moral compass, but that's also his charm. Absolute rogue, he, and I love him for it. His "The Pyrates" is similar, but with even less of a fourth wall. Um, I should add that, since it's also currently being read. By me. Possibly by more than just me, but I'm the only one I care about. And you, obviously. And several other people, but I won't tell them if you don't. Ok, that's done.

Totally beautiful and nonlinear. Jim's poems are both definite and indefinite at the same time. Wilderness is whatever you want it to be!

The best story in this collection is "The Kiss" and it's notable that it is not told from the perspective of any of the four girls nor is it told from the perspective of any of the four girls as children. "The Kiss" is worth 5 stars definitely. The rest of the stories are missing something. Alvarez seems to want to simultaneously create and break the archetypes of Latina women. Even though most of the stories are told from the pespective of the various 4 daughters, their voices all pretty much sound the same -- wide-eyed innocence trying so hard to make some sense of the world and retreating into itself in the face of reality. I got tired of this book about half way through, but "The Kiss" is definitely worth reading.

I really wanted to love this book. The words and flow of this book is captivating and beautiful but the story is too damning for the likes of me. I loved her but mostly hated her and that goes for most of the others too. For the way it was written or translated I give it 5 stars. For the way Tolstoy picked apart and portrayed each central character I give it 5 stars, but as for enjoying the way this book made me feel I give it 0 stars. I was cranky most of the time I read this book because I wanted her to meet her potential, to be strong and worthy of herself and stop ruining the beauty of the literature. Nope... Not for me.

My young neighbor asked me to read this so she could talk to someone about it - thought I'd better hurry since she is babysitting tomorrow. Not the best time for a 400 page book, but how could I say no since she loved it so much? Horror-fantasy? Coming of age in a proper London boarding school, yet with magical elements and frightening antagonists... I'm up for the next in the series.

I first read this book when I was 19 and I loved it; it immediately became one of my favorite books, even though I went through a long bout of writers’ block that I attribute to my reading of it. I think that it’s a truly brilliant novel (and I really felt for Sylvia Plath when I found out that upon publication it got scathingly poor reviews). It’s hilarious and tragic and I so empathize with the protagonist. Like many first novels, it’s a thinly veiled biographical work. I know that a lot of people pick up this book because they are fascinated by Plath’s suicide, but I think that it stands on its own, even without any knowledge of the author. Incredibly well written story of a talented young women going through a mental breakdown.

After Heidi, this was my 2nd childhood favorite book, followed later by Jane Eyre.

I'm not giving this one a rating for, as you can see, I have admitted defeat and am big quitty quitter! Made it through the first of the four books and then no further. Perhaps one day this will be revisited but for now there are more pleasing books awaiting me on my shelves and life is just too short.
I highly reccomend this book, Tesla was amazing.
