Overall, I enjoyed this adventure fantasy. The story is fast-paced and entertaining, and the desert setting is interesting. However, a lot of important things were left out of the story. The most serious gap is in the development of the protagonist. Throughout the course of the story, Harry undergoes a rapid transformation from a displaced orphan to a heroine weilding a sword of legend, yet there is hardly a hint of an inner struggle. This makes her seem very one-dimensional. Then there are the other omissions. For example, almost no time is devoted to developing the feelings of the two main characters toward each other, and then suddenly, they're in love. We never do learn about Harry's ancestry specifically, and why she - essentially an outsider to her own people - was chosen to carry the sword. Then there's the problem of the "Northerners," a race of non-human, demon-like beings whose nature and origin are never explained. We know essentially nothing about the history of this world. I did like the book, but I would have preferred a more complete and developed story.

I am still trying to understand how such a morose book managed to win the Booker (maybe those are kind of books that will win). While the writing style is good, it is too strange that the book focuses completely on English-speaking inhabitants in rural India and customs that seem so out-of-place. It almost seems like she picks half-a-dozen people who are so weird that is quite easy to write about them. It was too slow-paced for me. The transition from New Jersey to Uttaranchal seem contrived and unnecessary.

When Pope John Paul died on the Saturday before Divine Mercy Sunday, I was sadden that he didn't have Mass for one of his favorite feasts, so I was very happy to learn that Cardinal Dziwisz started saying the Vigil for him before he died. :) I also like hearing about how he would sneak out to go skiing or he would jump from moving cars to escape spies. Pope on a mission, indeed.
