My three-year-old nephew LOVES this book. He asks me to read it to him all of the time. "Ann Ninny (Aunt Cindy), Read THIS one, What's THIS ONE say, Ninny? BIG PLANS, Ninny SKUNK HAT." This child loves the mynah bird and the skunk hat, and he loves to try to repeat the big WORDS that go along with such big plans. And when we get to "PENNSYLVANIA! Build a rocket ship!" and "The rest of you, mill about! MILL ABOUT, I say!" he just lights up. He knows that outer space is coming up, and there's just something incredibly intriguing to him about space ships (as well as dinosaurs, but there aren't any dinosaurs in this story). That said, and since I'm including this in a class project for my graduate class on Child & Adolescent literature, I have to switch gears from being excited about Drake being excited about this book to me being thoughtful about what to say about it for class. This story is about a little boy, and soon, he thinks, the world will know all about his big plans. Apparently, he's been scheming in class, rolling his eyes at his teacher, acting like the boss of the class, laughing at other children when they talk, proving his teacher wrong, and generally being mean. The half-collage/half-illustrated mixed media artwork around which the book is designed is absolutely incredible. In this first illustration, the boy is sitting in a classroom with a poster of the world, a poster of the phases of the moon, a poster of birds including a mynah bird, a toy helicopter and airplane, a clock, several desks, a jar of pencils, and a bookshelf on which there are a US atlas, a book on Rocketry, a book of Tall Tales, a book called The Lil Stinky Skunk, a volume of The PRESIDENTS, and a baseball & football. On the chalkboard, he has written "I will not roll my eyes, etc." There is a piece of chalk and several desks. This sets the stage. Let your imagination run wild. From here, he imagines climbing up the highest hill in town, and screaming "I GOT BIG PLANS / BIG PLANS I SAY!" after which he meets a mynah bird, who agrees to come along. He and the mynah bird go to the city and take over a board room full of Muckety-Mucks and Bigwigs, then to the stadium to win the game, becomes the mayor, finds a skunk and wears it as a hat (stinky lucky hat), paints the town red, takes over the white house, makes Pennsylvania build a rocket ship, Idaho make some space suits with potato technology, and Missouri cheer up (while the rest of the states mill about), and goes to the moon, where he and the mynah bird and the skunk arrange moonrocks in such a way that we can see them spell out a message (I GOT BIG PLANS! BIG PLANS, I SAY!). And throughout the book, the big plans are illustrated with artwork inspired by the things he was surrounded by in the classroom. And what's more, it almost reads itself out loud. Reading it is just fun.
