I read this book without realizing that it is book two of the Revelation Space series. This is almost more of a detective novel than a Sci-Fi except that it is set in a completely different world. Very fast paced and fun.
The story opens in 1906 in New Rochelle, New York, at the home of an affluent American family. One lazy Sunday afternoon, the famous escape artist Harry Houdini swerves his car into a telephone pole outside their house. And almost magically, the line between fantasy and historical fact, between real and imaginary characters, disappears. Henry Ford, Emma Goldman, J. P. Morgan, Evelyn Nesbit, Sigmund Freud, and Emiliano Zapata slip in and out of the tale, crossing paths with Doctorow’s imagined family and other fictional characters, including an immigrant peddler and a ragtime musician from Harlem whose insistence on a point of justice drives him to revolutionary violence. I had included this book in a round of book speed dating, where I determine if I want to keep a book I haven't read yet. It passed the test and then E.L. Doctorow passed away, so I decided to go back to it. This is pretty much an in memoriam read! I included the publisher summary in the review so you can see all Doctorow is trying to do in 270 pages. I can see why this went on to become a Broadway show, because there are a lot of little stories without a lot of connection other than era and aspiration; it would make for great little vignettes and featured songs with a large cast of recognizable characters, and a few unnamed characters like "Younger Brother" and "Grandfather." There is a lot in here - industry, greed, racial tensions, anarchy, women's rights, even Rosicrucianism! I'm not sure it works as a novel but was still an enjoyable read on a Sunday afternoon.
after enjoying most of her other work, i found this one very disappointing.
First I loved the Prey series and Flowers but I did not care for the dark subject matter of this book. All the characters were perfect and it was a page turner - just thought it wasn't a good as the Prey series.

I liked this well enough, but not quite well enough to understand what the big deal is/was. Would have been infinitely stronger without the backward-forward flashback chapters.

How is it that Jonathan Franzen manages to be self-deprecating and yet aggressively egotistical at the same time? It's a mystery.

I really wanted to love this book. And I don't usually consider myself at all pretentious in literary style, but for me this was unreadable. I've read a lot of Dickens and even Catcher in the Rye was one of my favorites in High School, but the dialogue segments were the least problematic. The sentences are all fragmented with too many periods, making it impossible to find flow. I got a little bit beyond pg. 200 before ultimately moving on. If you've ever seen the movie, it's just as endearing and much easier a commitment. Perhaps one day I'll go back to finish it, but I was not getting into it at all.
Totally not what I expected and I loved it. I kept thinking this book was about Vampires but it wasn't, well I guess in a sense it was because instead of blood they suck your life essence out of you and it is to feed the demon inside. Was a really interesting story and I loved it!
just in time for my birthday! i was thinking about aging and thought why not read the reflections of someone who is little more older than me. nothing great but made me laugh in a couple of places. made me think about appreciating my neck and also about getting a purse one day.
