This is an incredible book, too overwhelming to read cover to cover, and it took me two months to read it. I stopped when I started to cry, which happened more than I expected. For this is the story of libraries and books from ancient times up to Iraq in the last decade, and their destruction, by fire, by war, by censorship, by librarians, and by worms. Rough reading, but Fernando Baez, the director of Venezuela's National Library, did an amazing job researching the details and the history. This will go directly to my librarian office in my library. I think it should be required reading in library school, and moreso for people who are making decisions in times of war. Donald Rumsfeld, that comment is for you, you whose only response to the lootings and destruction in Baghdad was to say that "Freedom's untidy." You could have ... should have... done something. Interesting tidbits: Biblophagy - eating book to gain esoteric wisdom. Apparently mentioned twice in the Bible! "Jacques Bergier suggested that there is a secret society that conspires to eliminate any book that may contribute to 'a too rapid and too extensive diffusion of knowledge.'"

Loved the way they capitalized on the wanderer, Woody Guthrie side of Dylan. Written like a story, it portrays good feelings of it's characters. It just leaves one hoping they really felt like that.

Slow and steady wins the race. It doesnt matter where you start. Just dont stop. The love, devotion and responsibility that this man unselfishly gave his son is level ten off the charts.

I didn't like it. I'm sorry, Linda, but I couldn't handle all the emoting. Maybe I've gotten cranky in my old age. Maybe I see a little too much of my younger, more irritating self in the main character. In anycase, there will not be a second chance for Paint It Black.

An ideal (utopian?) classroom set up. Great suggetsions, but there's only one Nancie Atwell... and there's only one foot stool.

A fun read. A mystery with psychological overtones. Escapee of a high-security prison realizes (after finding the first mirror he's encountered since being incarcerated) that he doesn't bear any resemblance to whom he thinks he is, and when he starts researching, can't find any traces of himself. It appears his memories are all in error, or he's somehow been erased from the world as he knew it. A good page-turner.

This book is full of "if only"s, both for Helen and for me. I wish it hadn't been quite so detailed. The idea of taking a "historical" tale and placing it into the mythological world they believed in at that time was fun and interesting, but unfortunately the romance side of it went a little too descriptive and I couldn't recommend it to my historical fiction loving friends. We all know the story. It would be easy enough to gloss over the gory, immoral details imo.
A brilliant book by Rohinton Mistry. All his books provide excellent reading with this parsi bawa twist. This one especially was moving with the old man. Waiting for his new one...he aint written any for nearly a decade. Wonder if he is still around ?

Although somewhat fantastic to believe, I really like this high seas adventure tale, especially the fact that it was from a girl's point of view. The character of Charlotte seemed true to her age (13 when the story starts) - naive, still looking for guidance & often acting without thinking the consequences through - but very gutsy and brave. A good story!

Love this book. It spoke to me on so many levels. I've read this book 3 times now and still feel I'm scratching the surface.
