I looked forward to reading this every night, but couldn't read it in a room where I had to turn out the lights at then end of the night...

I like old west stories involving strong women. This was a christian lit book, and pretty good.

Flavia de Luce is a different type of heroine. The fact that she is almost eleven makes her quite precocious. The rest of the characters are nicely drawn; specially her sisters. The plot is good; but it never really sucks you in like a good mystery should. It is more funny than anything: the remarks and things that Flavia says are extraordinary. I will read the second book when it releases in hopes that the story will mature, as well as the author.

This book manages to be a pageturner in spite of the fact that no one says anything in less than a paragraph and it’s in very dense early 19th century prose, and the hero of the title is actually pretty boring…but I thought it was brilliant. It might be because it has tilting, Robin Hood, renegade Templars, race and religion problems, and a heroically brave woman. And I am a complete sucker for books with those things in them. Seriously, though, the story is vivid and gripping and the people (probably excluding poor Ivanhoe himself) leap off the page. It packs in a gaudy romantic rendition of everything that British Victorians liked to think about their medieval history with much more reliance on Shakespeare than, say, fact, but notably it escapes a lot of expected cliches. Do watch out, though, for the Footnote on Athelstane. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Did anyone watch Saturday mornings when they would have the live action version of these stories. Man that was entertaining, plus that would always have those cautionary after school special tales. I miss late 80's early 90's tv.

This was pretty good. I think you'd like it, plus it's about sisters.
Waiting was the first book that I read by Ha Jin. I wasn't a huge fan of this book. I read it for a book club and most of the other people at the meeting hadn't loved the book either. The title of the book is pretty appropriate since I felt like I spent most of the book waiting for something... anything. I felt no connection with the characters or their love story. Since I read this book, I have read other books by Ha Jin and enjoyed them much more.

This book was pretty good, not as funny as I was expecting, but still entertaining.
