This recent treatment of one of the most important events of Classical history focuses on the seldom-told personal stories of individual soldiers and citizens. Thematic (rather than chronological) chapter organization, and frequent comparisons with more recent conflicts (Vietnam, Iraq, etc...) make for an engaging and accessible read.

Interesting Tidbits - Three forces need to create the long tail: 1. democratize production: give average people the ability to create quality content (movies, music, blogs) 2. democratize distribution: technology to aggregate *all* the content in a genre (Amazon, Netflix, iTunes) 3. Connect Supply and Demand: filters to help people find the niche's they are interested in (Google, recommendations, best-seller lists) - One quarter of Amazon's sales come from books outside its top 100,000 titles. Thus having a long tail adds ~33% to your bottom line. - Ranking bestsellers across niche's genre's gives little value. Filters to rank items must be applied within each niche to become relevant. Goodreads could improve here. - As the number of niche's increases, the ability of people to consume more content within the genre increases. This depends on the genre, but it gives me hope that we can increase the number of people who read through Goodreads, by creating better filters to connect readers of various niche's. - each year 200,000 books are published in english, and fewer than 20,000 make it into a bookstore. Only 2% of the books published in 2004 sold more than 5000 copies, and can be considered profitable. - There is another factor that determines why people create content, other than money: reputation. - Ebay has 60 million active users
This book was pure Gold - it was impossible to put down, and its clear to see why its a classic. Watching Holmes apply his methods to each case and unravel it to the eternaly baffled Watson was entertaining and even inspiring. I only wish I was as smart as Sherlock. I actually think we can all learn a lot from Sherlock - even if he is fictional :) Some other interesting things I learned: - sherlock only says 'elementary' once - sherlock does cocaine when bored in between cases . I guess it wasn't such a big deal back then? - one caper delved into the history of the Mormons, which was very interesting

This should be required reading in every eighth grade class.
So far I am enjoying but also reading a couple of other books at the same time. If you have read Picoult's books before you know what to expect. Her stories are well written and unique in their own way but they always have a legal twist.

After reading book two, I thought this series was going downhill fast. However, Green-Eyed Demon saved the series! I laughed out loud, cried, and wanted to read the next in the series. I really like the badass Sabrina and Team Awesome! The plot of this story kept me hooked. I wanted to read ahead to know what was coming. (I didn't, heehee, but I wanted to) I gave this one 4 stars because sometimes I felt like the characters sounded the same, they didn't come off as individual characters. Adam came off more like Sabrina than the character from the other books. Can't wait for book 4!

I did not enjoy this book at all. From back cover: "E. Annie Proulx's 'Accordian Crimes' is a masterpiece of storytelling that spans a century and a continent. Proulx brings the immigrant experience in America to life through the eys of the descendants of Mexicans, Poles, Africans, Irish-Scots, Franco-Canadians and many others, all linked by their successive ownership of a simple green accordion. The music they make is their last link with the past - voice for their fantasies, sorrows and exuberance. Proulx's prodigious knowledge, unforgettable characters and radiant language make Accordion Crimes a stunning novel, exhilarating in its scope and originality."

Another book that I adored. Way better than the movie. I cried when it was over. I fell in love with so many characters in the book-the woman who lived next door to her was so wonderful as well as the young mom. Amazing book!
This novel had promise, but to me it did not deliver. The informal narrative style and boarding school setting echoed other dystopian writing, and the constant foreshadowing screamed that something big was to come. Building up and up and up and then . . . nothing. Frankly, I thought that the **SPOILER** organ donation subplot was just that: a subplot. It wasn't fleshed out enough (pun intended) for me to get hooked, and I just couldn't get attached to any of the characters enough to be pulled in. I wanted to quit reading the book altogether except I was curious if ANYTHING interesting would actually happen. By the last page, the only thing that had developed was an unconvincing romance. Read Unwind to get the colorful dystopia and thoughtful plot twists that Never Let Me Go forgot.
THAT ENDING! Left me hanging and confused like always~ The plot is still all over the place but not as much as the first volume. I don't feel attached to any characters because when you think you're going to learn something from them, it jumps to another scene with different characters! The only way I can understand what went on is the read the recap in the next volume. Of course that's what I'm going to do -.-
