I didn't really get into this book until around midway through when it became more a murder mystery. I found the characters very loyal to each other and bonded in their friendship. I thought how nice it would be to have a group of women as meddling and helpful as these ladies were and look out for each other. I feel like now with email and the internet in general you might think you know how someone is doing by what they write online, but it's not as often people show up on your doorstep to reassure themselves you really are doing okay.

I liked this novel, very unique and had a ton of details about painting and painters. I loved those details personally because I am an art history lover and also love to paint. I wonder for a non painter if those details may get boring.

This was a great memoir. It was easy to read and by the end you felt like you knew her. It is also easy to get into because you knew the public persona of the key people in her life.

The Song of Roland is one of the great French works of the 12th century, illustrating a fascinating anachronistic mix of 12th-century storytelling and values with an 8th century tale. Though the battle scenes are rendered with all the pulse-pounding vivid prose of a Wi-Fi installation instruction manual, this book still manages to have some good moments. Sadly, its formulaic approach--though typical of medieval romances--makes it predictable for a modern reader. Onthe other hand, Roland's last stand is pretty Boromir-esque, and well worth trudging through the endless list of ridiculous supposed Saracen names that occupy the middle third of the story. Overall, it's a good story, but there are more enjoyable out there.

A hopeful yet realistic account of growing up in Brooklyn in the early 1900's. It was very interesting to see how the advent of technologies we use every day now (cars, phones, radios) changed people's lives when it first came out. I love how the protagonist had such a love for learning, and also such devotion to her family. Sending kids to school used to be a sacrifice!

This is one of my favourite books - I found it in an independent second-hand bookstore in Ironbridge, and it's just perfect. It's about a tiny Italian town and how they cope when the fountain stops working the tree in the church gardens (that has been alive, it is rumoured since the life of Christ) stops blooming. Well written and poignant, D.L. Smith creates a world of down-to-earth characters, stripping humanity to bare bones and raw flesh. This book wasn't ever a best-seller, but that's what I love about it.

Twenty years after the child prophet Aisling foresaw the future the human mutant psions, Threnody Corwin and her partner Quinton Martinez are dispatched to what remains of Los Angeles, now known as ‘The Slums of the Angels’ on a suicide mission for failing to obey orders on Corwin’s last mission. The two are part of the Strykers Syndicate, enslaved solders contracted out on the most dangerous missions. Psions came in various class and strengths, armed with telepathic strengths with the ability to teleport at a moment’s notice. This time they were to hunt down and eliminate Lucas, the rogue son of Nathan Serca, a high-level, gene-trash human who was posing as a genetically-registered human. Serca, who was in charge of gathering the humans for a journey on the Arc to Mars. Earth was seriously depleted of all its natural resources after The Border Wars. The World Court convened and decided who is worthy to travel to the colony and Earth will be left to the mutants and unregistered masses. Lucas has another plan in mind, rescuing those that deserve to be, those who will make this world a better place. Once he can arrange to have the neurotrackers cut out of the necks of the four Strykers he recruits, once he convinces them that his powers and skill levels are superior to theirs, they take on the project of protecting the followers Lucas has gathered together. Serca pulls out all stops to get the remaining Strykers to bring in the fallen four and a pitch battle over human rights on Earth takes place during the twenty-fourth century. With the help of matron they raid the Gene Bank and the Seed Bank in an effort to save humankind. Will the destiny that Ailing prophesized come to pass or was it just the ramblings of mad child?
