Dry was maybe the most gripping book I've ever read from this genre. Burroughs somehow manages to make his battle with alcoholism funny, and yet at the same time very devastating and real. I couldn't put it down towards the end, not because it was particularly captivating and enjoyable, but more so because I really wanted to make sure he got through it all in the end.

Another wonder I discovered in the English-language section of a German bookshop as an ignorant eighteen-year-old backpacking round Europe. A wonderful trickster novel.
This might be my favorite book. It follows a kid in NYC from Columbia University to homelessness, to a cross-country trek. An adventure that crosses the landscape of New York, the sould, America, and one's checking account.

Rocky Graziano's Horatio Alger rise from Alphabet City street hood to middleweight champ of the world; told in Rocky's own colorful "deese, dem & does" street lingo. Kudos to sports writer Rowland Barber, the Rock's "co-author." A best seller when originally released and still the best boxing book ever written.

Read this very quickly having just finished the first shopaholic book. Loved it, though probably not as much as the first one.

This book is full of very useful insights and ideas about retailing. Very lucidly written, very practical. The ideas explained in the book can make a difference, not just to the largest of shopping malls in India, but also the smallest of grocery stores. However, I felt that Underhill repeats himself a lot of times across the book. Could have been much shorter and concise.
I still can't believe I read all of these books. It was easy to get lost in the plot of this book, but it's definitely no "Beowulf," am I right? It's a guilty pleasure--nothing more. The kind of book you'd want to put a book cover on, lest someone get a glimpse of the cover while you're reading it at lunch.

Wow, do I have a lot to learn. Definitely worth taking some time to read The End of Poverty. You can read my review and other nonfiction favorites at: http://laurareviews.blogspot.com/sear...

Mark Bittner was a homeless vagabond, failed musician and a self styled dharma bum. After wandering the streets of San Francisco staying wherever he could find shelter, someone told him about an ad for a caretaker of sorts for an elderly woman in exchange for a studio apartment. It was here that he discovered the parrots and began feeding them. Not finding much information about their history or habits, he determined to learn as much as possible and in the process befriended many of them. I normally love these kinds of books, but the writing style here was a bit dry and I was left often times wanting more. I was also disappointed in the photos that were included at the beginning of each chapter. All black and white. For a book about very colorful parrots, the inclusion of black and white photos of the subjects seemed strange. You can not see the subtle color variations he tells about in these photos. It was frustrating. The chapter "Consciousness Explained" seemed a bit self indulgent. I will also say that I found it very hard to like this man. His plan for just sitting around and letting life happen to him as part of his spiritual journey (which even that- he just sort of fell into), was all just irritating. I found myself struggling to finish it.
