LOVE IT

I waited nearly a year to buy this and I was hoping that it might offer some sort of insight, but I was very disappointed by the book overall. I felt I learnt more about the different styles of communication of men and women rather than communication between mothers and daughters.

1983 Caldecott Medal Winner A innovative book using woodblock prints combined with watercolor to create a collage effect. Marcia Brown's text is a translation of a poetic French work about Shadow, the personification of every type of shadow in Africa. Sort of creepy, but interesting at the same time.
I loved Keeper Of The Light. An absorbing, touching, fast-paced story that had me drawn into the lives of the wonderfully written characters, so much so, that I felt as if I was actually there watching the events unfold. This is my first book by Diane Chamberlain and I am thrilled to discover that it is the first book in a trilogy.

I really resonated with this book, probably for a few reasons, and mostly with the first section in Italy (and dang! now I really want to go to Italy!). Of course there is the whole divorce aspect, and searching for God (although I don't agree with her theology, but there were parts I could relate to), but that was all so long ago for me. I think what I really loved about this book was the perfect timing of learning pleasure while I'm in the midst of this life change where I'm really soaking up the pure enjoyment of day-to-day life. In fact, I read the majority of this book while soaking in my claw foot bathtub last night! I really like the author's writing style and was surprised to learn I had already read one of her books, The Last American Man, a couple years ago.

Will the town hold? Can the survivors really build a new society? This volume explores these possibilities. Rick faces some dire consequences for a decision he makes (doesn't he always?), but his speech at the end gives me hope. Looking forward to volume 15 in 2012!

Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors of all time. His books often get a bad rap for being depressing, but he manages to portray horrific situations in an astoundingly optimistic light. Read it. You won't regret it.
A good friend of mine gave me this book for Christmas. A year later, I picked it up from my to-read pile and slowly made acquaintance with it over the course of a week. It became a 'friend' of sorts -- I brought the book with me while I traveled my junior year in college, and though I never went back to reread it (probably never will), I still feel safer when I have it nearby. Strange, considering it's a vampire romance fantasy, for all intents and purposes. (Bubblegum fic; 300 pages)
