A gripping story - Westerfeld writes action sequences perfectly -- about a future where everyone has the "operation" at age 16 to make them beautiful and harmless -- except one young lady who just can't seem to stay out of trouble. Aimed at teens, the slang of the new culture is a bit irritating and distracting, but the characters are very nicely drawn, and like said, the action sequences are terrific. Many interesting questions about the good and bad of "human nature." "
as always with hofstadter you better be willing to put in some effort to read his books, but damn when the ideas finally start to seep in its like learning how to add or read again. good times!
Fascinating.
At first I was little dissapinted that Aislinn, Keenan and Seth weren't the main characters, but it didn't last much! I surely love the new ones. I wasn't able to say "you are the bad guy and you are the good one" Irial, Naill, and Leslie have such a complicated love triangle that is hard for me to deside who is my favorite one. The end was beautiful. I never thought Irial could have such feelings, been the king of the Dark Court and all, and definately NOT for a mortal girl. I loved this book, and I'm looking forward to reading more about the Dark Court and Leslie's story. Will she come back to the fairie world? I certainly hope so! Will she have to choose between Naill and Irial? We will see! =)

One of the most difficult things I've ever had to do as a reader is to give myself permission to abandon a book. As a child I would always force myself to finish a book once I had started it, no matter how badly I disliked it. Not so anymore. I have finally gotten to the point where I firmly believe, and I tell my students this all the time, there are too many goods books out there waiting to be read to spend your time finishing a book you just don't like. This book is one of those books. I have read 149 out of 372 pages and I'm just not enjoying it. I don't feel any draw, anything making me want to continue on. I am sure that there will be many people who will absolutely love this book, but as for me, I've decided to not spend anymore time with it.

This book was an interesting mix of mystery, alt-history, and life in the English countryside in the mid-twentieth century. Considering the setting, it was almost bizarre how the book still hit close to home for me. I don't want to say any more for fear of spoiling it!

This book was an odd dichotomy for me - there were aspects of it that I really didn't like, and yet it kept pulling me forward. The book was published in 1992 but is supposed to be taking place after the turn of the century. But there are so many technological advances that have happened between 1992 and now, that their absence was often a bit of a shock. The lack of cell phones and laptop computers spring immediately to mind. The main character was very well written, but a bit hard to like. WJW clearly did his research, as the town and its people felt very real to me. Still, things take a long while to really get going, and the ending left me hanging more than I'd like. I've enjoyed other books he's written more.
