By the end I kind of wished they'd made different decisions at the beginning of the book. The characters didn't really grow on me. It gets 2 instead of 3 from me because I had to suffer through the group's vacation. Still, I thought it was okay. Not my favorite Hornby book. But a good read for an airplane.

I had to fight with myself to get this book finished. I just didn't like Con or the way he treated Stephen, or his whole attitude of "I'm NOT gay...but I want to have sex with Stephen like whoa." Yeah, that got old real fast. Too much one step forward, two steps back.
I read this while I was in college and getting my minor in Education and I was stunned to learn about the conditions in schools across this country. A true eye-opener.
A must read.
This is the biography of a Marian Anderson, a black singer. Good way to help children about the segregation that existed in the past.

How I Came To Read This Book: I've seen it everywhere. I've heard about it everywhere. So I got it from the library. The Plot: Diana is a non-practicing witch-turned-alchemy-historian, studying at Oxford when she magically calls a very powerful and sought-after manuscript from the Bodleian library. Soon Oxford is flooded with witches, daemons, and vampires - the three creatures that walk the earth aside from us clueless humans - as they try to figure out how Diana was able to obtain the manuscript which had long been thought as lost. A threatening yet predictably dashing vampire named Matthew steps in to protect Diana, and the two develop a swift, intense relationship - one that threatens the balance these mysterious creatures have been trying to maintain, and one that quickly reveals layers upon layers of deeper, darker issues. The Good & The Bad: I know what you're thinking. Witches AND a vampire love story in one fell swoop? In an adult novel format? Sign me up! Unfortunately, readers expecting a Twilight-esque escape from reality or a Harry Potter-esque world of quirky charm and expert storytelling will likely be disappointed. I was. Harkness' book was just...too much. But also conversely, not enough. The extreme attention to detail felt so unnecessary. When you read enough books, you'll notice that a good writer is able to integrate details seamlessly, and allows the reader to pick up details that will come into play later. The insane amounts of detail on setting, character, and appearance didn't come into play later. Neither did a bunch of the conversations, plot points, or back stories. I'm sure they were included to help colour the story, to make you feel like you knew everything you possibly needed to know about this world...but see, unfortunately, I didn't feel a thing for the book. I didn't care for Diana and Matthew's smug 'fated' relationship, I never felt any anxiety or interest in the fleeting and confusing plot 'reveals', and I really have no idea where the book is going in an overriding arc. The next book's plot - at least in part - is pretty clear, but I can't say it's a story I really care to follow. Everything just felt arbitrary and tiresome, like this entire 600-page tome was really just a series of introductory chapters to a much larger book. It was frustrating for the book to not have an integral, self-contained plot - instead relying on its trilogy-status to keep you interested. The simple truth is, I'm not. When a book feels like work to read or constantly has me hitting the hay after a couple of chapters, it's really just not the book for me. It definitely could have used a different approach for editing - both in terms of the length, and in terms of the storytelling. The Bottom Line: A disappointing entry into a new, buzzed-about trilogy. It had potential, it really did, but if you can't make me care even a little, I won't be picking up the rest of this series. Anything Memorable?: Nope. 50-Book Challenge: Book #36 in 2011
Every now and then a book comes along that delves into a particular subject so beautifully that it provides a sort of trellis of wisdom for expanding ones view of the world.

so, in the light of loving damn near any pretentious English eccentric wanna-be, this book is great, hilarious at times and, dare i say, appropriate. i will be passing this one to several people, for a multitude of reasons...
