It's hard for me to describe this book. Marquez follows one family in South America from the start of their village, through a war, and the many children and grandchildren in between. Adding mysticism, religious and poltical conflicts, and intense imagery, he builds an idea of this city that is beautiful and spiritual. It is a book where you have to let yourself go of conventional ideas and the ways things are "supposed" to be, but when you do you get lost in a wonderful story.
This book was good--a fairly quick, engrossing read. I'm hesitant to say too much about the plot, as it was very reminiscent of another book--but to mention the title will totally ruin The Basic Eight, so you're best off just reading it for itself, and waiting until you're finished to put it down and rant, "That was just like ______________!" In fact, the ending is why I only gave it 4 stars, instead of the 5 I was thinking it deserved until that point.
such a sexi novel! one of my favourites

This was a summer reading before my senior year of high school. I remember not enjoying it that much when I read it then, but I gained a lot more respect for it when we went over it in my senior class. I had missed a lot of what was going in the the play when I read it distracted and independently over the summer. We spent a lot of time that year looking at the stereotype in literature of "the crazy woman upstairs" and this piece was part of that.

I liked it - that's what 3 stars relates too. It's hard to say you loved a book of this genre as the head count and nature of the murders is more of an endurance than enjoyment. I felt I knew the main characters from previous TV adaptations featuring DI Travis & her boss Langton. Well executed plot and not too many silly red herrings in a well documented investigation. However, the insight into the personal life of ambitious Anna Travis reveals another damaged, hard edged Jane Tennison in the making.

Relationships between women are complex at best—made all the more so by social pressures and family ties. Ms. Umrigar weaves her tale so beautifully that the true, destructive ugliness under the surface sneaks up on the reader. Her characters are people we know or can see in our selves in spite of cultural differences. Perhaps this is one of the reasons the story moved me so deeply. Ms. Umrigar tells a simple yet eternal story with grace and palpable emotion within a world that is exquisitely drawn. The first and last line echo each other in a way that makes the entire novel feel like a poetic experience. The Space Between Us has earned a place on the shelf of books that I treasure and read over and over. It's one of the best books I have read in quite awhile.
