Hard to separate fond childhood memories from the book. Made the staff book discussion group read these. Mixed response. I still love them.

this book is frightening, beautiful, graphic, and masterfully written without a shred of self-pity or misplaced blame. it's about a young boy's journey through chicago's youth services department, told in reverse, which is not so much a gimmick but i very shrewd editing decision that deals with the chronological events very intuitively. read this, it's short.

The story was great but I ended up disliking all of the characters except for Walter, Lalitha and Jessica.

the only thing i really remember about this (besides the shocking ring of nuns part) is her stunning writing style. which, somejawdroppinghow outshined the rather fascinating content. at the time, i thought i agreed with her. i definitely share her love of mischief. perhaps it should be reread.

Brockmann's Tall, Dark & Dangerous series is addictive fluff.

Yeah, I'm the last person in the world to finally read this and I do regret not getting to it sooner - after the urging of so many for so long. Most of what I loved about this book was what I could take back home to my own kitchen. Like, I use a lot more shallots now that I used to and it has made a difference. The seedy underbelly of the New York restaurant scene isn't really as awful as I expected from all the clatter about this book; he never, ever describes defiling food for customers. In fact, it's quite the opposite - he uniformly has a reverence for the always dysfunctional efforts of the kitchen staff to deliver quality repast at all costs. The mad drama from owner to chef to kitchen staff to wait staff is the crux here, and that was pretty interesting - and his descriptions of the fools and warriors in each of these roles was brilliant. And, finally, it brought my fantasies about wanting to own an establishment to a swift and neat end. All in all I'm sure this $8 Kindle book will save me at least 100K someday.

This book sent me through a range of emotions. I felt anger, sympathy, happiness, humor, and sadness. The life that the author, Jeanette Walls, indured as a child is hard to understand considering her parents had all the means of making a decent life for their children. It made me angry to know of all conditions they forced their children in to. Though, there are some funny and happy moments that do make this book quite enjoyable. Walls did a remarkable job of recounting her childhood and sharing it with her readers. Great read!
