Downham handles this painful subject exceptionally well - The book is heartwrenching and tragic, yet never dips into melodrama (except, perhaps, for the unfailingly faithful boyfriend who almost falls into the category of too-good-to-possibly-be-true) the writing (especially the descriptions) is absolutely beautiful and the main character is completely real - sometimes angry and shallow, sometimes caring and strong. Painful yet hopeful, unflinchingly honest and ultimately as much about life as it is about death.
Very cool book of Barker's Artwork.

Updated: 10/14/14: So I just re-read the newer "lightly edited" version and since I didn't write a review the 1st time I thought I'd add it now. Julia Devaux witnessed a mob murder and now she's in the Witness Protection Program (though, I think they called it something else in the book). A high class Boston book editor with an active social life and a taste for nice things she's now relocated to Simpson Idaho with a tiny population of nice townsfolk including a sexy rancher named Sam Cooper (Cooper. Julia's new name is Sally Ann Anderson and her cover is school teacher. Julia and Cooper are attracted. He's very taciturn and she charms him. It's Lisa Marie Rice so of course there are hot love scenes and deep emotions as well as the simultaneous tracking of the professional who is out to claim the bounty offered by the mobster Julia's set to testify against. So Julia started out as a pretty sophisticated woman but she changed into a more soft spoken doe eyed damsel in need of rescuing. Not so bad really, I don't mind that in a romance but she did exhibit a bit of TSTL behavior (you know, asking them not to protect her by guarding her in a hotel room somewhere but then complaining about having the locals protect her while she goes about her daily business). The locals were all very endearing and sweet and the town was something of a character in itself. So re-reading after 3 years I have to confirm my 4 star rating. Lisa Marie Rice delivers a good story with emotional romance.

كتاب جميل من حيث اللغة التي يحملها ,, لكن لو أبتعد عن المبالغة الممقوتة في الوصف ,, لكن هذا يحسب للكاتب ,, على العموم الكتاب بمجمله مقبول ,,

This year marks ten years since I graduated from a tiny liberal arts school. Those four years were pivotal, important and fun years--and while reading Tam Lin, I kept thinking of Hendrix and my Hendrix friends and the fact that they should be reading this book with me. We didn't quote poetry on a regular basis, but we certainly had some long, deep conversations. The kinds of conversations I rarely have now. It bogs in the middle, and I wish she had taken more time with the ending, but. . .it really is a magical book. But she totally captures the small college, liberal arts experience--the goofy traditions, the intense professors and students, the struggle over what to take, the library (Hendrix's old library was underground, so this tidbit gave me a special thrill). And then it all magically comes together and you just want to stay in that world a little longer.

I am really enjoying this series. The plot line started out cliche--the journey story with the young talented kid being coached along the way to becoming a powerful warrior--but its whimsical black humor (yes, they can co-exist) has won me over and I'm a fan.
First of all let me say what a pleasure it was to hold this book in my hands --- though it's a paper back, it has dust-jacket flaps both front and back, and the paper is rough cut. Fabulous. I bought it for its binding. And a pretty good story as well --- loosely based on a still unsolved crime of three decades ago when two young sisters went missing. Told from multiple points of view with a sort-of surprise at the end.
I live on the Isle of Wight, for my sins and the phrase that is often applied to us is, "Forty minutes across the water and Forty years back in time". Newsbiscuit is one of the better British satire websites and this excellent collection of its articles is funny without being offfensive, unless you come from the Isle of Wight!
It was a cute book and easy to read. The character did annoy me at times with how she could convince herself out of her debt situation. But I have done the same thing, so I could relate to that too. :)
Rich with culture.
