The story is an allegory about Britain's decision to enter the war in Iraq told through one day in the life of a neurosurgeon in London. If this was written by anyone except McEwan, I would give it five stars.

being from detroit and having moved to san francisco, this book was especially relevant to me...well, almost...sans the hermaphrodite part.

Though I'm skipping quickly through the final 50 pages so I can return it today, I found myself engaged with the author throughout the book. She has a delightful sense of humor about her obsessions which enable both the crazy and sane among us to enjoy her story.

This was a fun and very quick read. I kept it in the bathroom and read a chapter a visit... it was like it was written for just such a purpose. McCarthy takes a no-holds barred approach to pregnancy, much like anyone familiar with her work would expect. She tells you about the poop, the witchiness, and the other weird stuff that will inevitably happen to you, and does so much like your crazy friend would tell it to you too.

I loved Wicked (who didn't?), and I love the idea of the alternate lives of fairytale characters, so this book seemed promising. From the beginning, this was a seriously a hard book to read. I started reading it September 2005 and had been slowly chipping away at it until I finished it last December. It got much tolerable towards the end, but overall, a difficult read.

Brilliant storyline, brilliant characters, brilliant concept. And the best version of death since Fredric March. Alright, fine. Brad Pitt did a fine job in his turn, too. But Gaimen's is still the best.

The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory was a story about Mary Boleyn and her family raising in King Henry's favor. At the age of twelve Mary was married and by the age of fourteen she had become the king's lover. This was all made possible by her family who wanted to raise in power and wealth. But Mary is not alone in her fight for the king she has his wife Queen Katherine who in the end loses her favor with the King. Even though everything seem to be in Mary's favor another problem for her is starting her sister Anne has caught the eye of the king. Even though Mary has given the king two children and one of them a son Anne wins in the end. Anne becomes Queen and her family is so happy because they receive more power. But I think Mary truly wins because she finds a man she actually loves and her children can be with her. Mary gets away from the court life while Anne is put aside as Queen and a new queen Jane takes her place. This book was sad because no one treated any one like a human everyone was after power and wanted to just please one man the king. He who had all the power and they worshiped him because they where so hungry for power! Thank goodness that we live in a time and a country where we are free to be ourselves and not fight as Mary did for her freedom.
