I really loved this book. It was written in a style that was both intelligent and easy to read. Personally, I thought it dragged a bit talking about Robbie's experiences in the war, and that's the section I found it hardest to get through, but I the rest of it was a breeze. The subject matter was facinating. It's hard to imagine being in any of the characters' positions, but it does make you think. Such a tragic love story.

I love the Cartoon History from when I got the first volume for Christmas as a kid and ignored all my family until I finished it that night. Volume 3 is centered around the Dark and Middle Ages for those of us who got a classical Euro-centric education. All the gaps that perplexed me as a kid are here (where did the Mongols come from - they just sprouted from the steppes of Asia like grass?, If China had all these cool inventions first how come they're not in charge by now? Why did the Spanish find all this Roman and Greek literature in Cordoba? When did the Roman Empire really end? Why aren't Turkey and Turkestan near each other?) Good questions all. And funny! History has some of the greatest characters ever, and Gonick keeps them human (or in one case, weaselly).

My love for Galeano cannot be textually rendered. He's a deeply radical man who writes beautiful books, and The Memoria del Fuego series is not what I think of as "history" - it's not dry, it's not footnoted, it's not strictly factual, but my god, is it compelling. This is exactly what it says in the title, and it's gorgeous.

A good rendering of "the troubles" in Ireland during the 1920s. It's actually two narratives in one.
I found the book juvenile, mediocre, poorly written and heretical. Didn't like how the Holy Trinity was portrayed.

Reading this reminded me why Ms. Kenyon is one of my favorite authors. I love the sarcastic quipping dialogue.

I LOVED this book. I found myself quoting from it and reading passages aloud to illustrate about a million different points (used it at work, for example, to explain to an employee that she needs to keep working at things like the Chinese rice farmers do!). I breezed through this in a couple of days.

This book had a twist at the end and not my favorite in the Donovan Creed series. A Kindle 99 cent purchase.
