There are not many books, who criticise our society in a such a brief historical way, mit an easy language. I think it's worth to be read and further recommended. It can be just a good begining to think about our basic social characteristical problems, to know our repeating mistakes, we iranian!

I loved the feel of the great old-fashioned ghost/romance! The language of the book was beautiful and thought-provoking and the ending was just right. There is nothing objectionable at all in this book.

As with all Fuentes novels, this one is very complex and displays his vast knowledge of virtually all things. It's also a rather sad portrait of Mexico City and its politics and culture in the late twentieth century. I think you have to know more about D.F. than I do to really appreciate the novel, but I'm a fan and student of Fuentes, so I enjoyed it.

Shatter Kinder serves as a prequel of sorts to Asphyxia, telling the story of Mordecio/Astothan and the hows and whys of the apocalyptic events that they set in motion which had to be resolved in volume 1 (as well as the story behind the gem in Eldridge's hat pin). It was slow going at first as I struggled to process the incredible amount of detail covering the dualistic nature of the Kinder as twinned individuals of either of two races on a higher plane of existence. Add in all the extra abilities of the divine Shatter Kinder and it becomes quite a challenge to keep up with what's going on, but if you actually enjoy getting to grips with large amounts of information then the payoff comes when it all starts to come into focus and feel consistent. All that detail isn't just fantastical window dressing, Gori actually plays by the rules that she has established and keeps the whole complicated universe ticking along like clockwork - everything makes sense. It helps that the story at the heart of it all is a fairly straightforward tale of a promising career gone wrong, a safe, secure, "normal" life thrown away in a fit of naive passion & teen angst. And what comes after of course, because the really interesting part is what you do after making the biggest mistake of your life. "As above, so below" is a major theme here, as these higher beings that mere humans view as gods are portrayed as being every bit as temperamental, fallible and conflicted as any human, so their feelings and motivations are reassuringly familiar in such an unusual setting. Despite the return of the "Sex & Horror" tag line on the back cover there is so much else going on here that there doesn't seem to be room for quite as much sex as in the previous installments and the horror is of a much more personal and emotional nature. Volume 3 is so very different from volume 2 that I can't even guess what's coming next!
One of my favorite read aloud books. Great rhyme and rhythm!. It will have you quoting it all day.

I come again to the end of this series, this time very well read by the incredible Jim Dale. I think I got even more out of the story by listening to his performance, and performance it is - each character has a different voice or accent - how does he do it? I was moved to tears several times at the end of the story. This was my 3rd read, but it was just as good as the first time. The escape from Gringott's was incredible, and the final battle scene was excellent. I would have liked an expanded final chapter to read more about what happened to our favourite characters.
It's been ages since I've read my old love Dickens. This one was classic Dickens style -- written in short installments with cliffhanger endings, Victorian subject matter and pathos, a huge cast of memorable characters that keep popping up over the intricate course of the novel. I still love Dickens but not as much as I did in my 20s. My favorite parts are the comic -- he is SO amazing at describing comic scenes and characters. So I think The Pickwick Papers are still my favorite among his novels (oh wait, I love A Tale of Two Cities, too). I'm less touched than before by the idealized young women with infinite patience in tough circumstances -- possibly just because they seem so static and so similar among the novels (Nell in this book, Agnes in David Copperfield, Esther in Bleak House). But good always wins and the bad (who are so bad!) get what they deserve. I also love the atmosphere of the scenes -- Dickens describes so well these places and times long past. And I appreciate the social changes that came about from his descriptions of the conditions in debtor prisons, factories, and the lives of the poor.
