I am sorry to say that I went un-vegan while reading this book. Not because of the book but, due to certain events, I have accepted dairy. In a way I'm kind of sad because, being vegan, you really DO feel like a freak. A freak without a ship to sail on. That is until you meet Bob and Jenna Torres, your new captains. They will guide you through some pretty solid information about veganism and animal rights and, although I no longer ride with their beliefs, I definitely recommend this for anyone on the fence. Or even for vegetarians and omnis just to get a look at the bigger picture of where your food (and clothing and cosmetics and furnisings and etc) comes from. Outstanding work.

The premise of this story was unique. I felt, the whole time I was reading that it was bordering on science fiction, fantasy, horror, and erotica. The description of the formless beast and explanation of how it lived was excellent. Some of the erotic elements bordered on disturbing, but I was prompted to keep reading because I was waiting for some redemption for the main (character?)

Erma Bombeck displays her usual amusing take on being a woman in the 70's. She's undertaken a journey to find herself with the help of self-help books, many of which are very thinly veiled satires of actual tomes from the late 70's. While hilarious and well-written, and like a lot written during this era, this book emphasizes and humorizes the role of a wife, mother, employee, and feminist. Probably best when read in the 1970's, although I wasn't there, so I couldn't say. I had the feeling that a lot of this was just sailing right over my head. Still enjoyed reading it, though, which says a lot.

This book reminded me of the movie, The Great Santini (1979) in its depiction of the relationship that the boy (Adam)has with his father, a naval officer stationed at Pearl Harbor. This story raises many interesting issues--gender roles and expectations (especially during the 1940s), military family life, racial stereotyping, Japanese interment during WWII, coming of age. However, none of the issues is really explored in any depth. A good teacher would have to coax and cultivate discussions out of the seeds planted around these topics in the book.

All my reviews of the books in this series are pretty much amounting to me saying the same things over and over again. Good plot, annoying writing style. This is the same, but I will say the writing wasn't as annoying this time. It also ended on a cliffhanger, which is fine since I'm planning on reading more of the series anyway. The annoying bits that usually get to me weren't so bad: not as much recapping, stereotyping, or boyfriend triangle problems. They're still there, just not as bad as in the past. The story remains pretty good and interesting. I'm curious if the next book will continue to get better writing wise, or if it will go back to how it's been. Overall, it was a decent book.

I absolutely loved this book. The two characters are absolutely amazing and it's wonderful to see their relationship progress through their struggle and survival. I highly recommend this book.

at worst this is adolesant rap mimicking crap, but at best, it transends structure and rhyme, turning the everyday into the poetic and the poetic into the everyday, Lemn chews up world history, and personal history, and weaves it into little states of social commentary, whit and invective, never more dense than they need to but just every so often too sparse, and repeated themes some times desend into repeated lines, probably great in public performance but not so great on the page, overall none the less fantastic and every diamond needs a little dirt to make gleam that brighter.

Things I Loved: Everything. From the big things to the little things. When Katniss stepped up to be the Mockingjay. When Peeta saved Katniss from committing suicide. when all the victors were gathered together and were given the responsibility of deciding the fate of Panem. It was all so beautiful. I just couldn't stop reading. Things I Hated: Everything. From the big things to the small things. The deaths, oh the deaths! I sobbed through the last 200 pages or so, crying my eyes out until it was over. I salute all the rebel soldiers. You didn't die in vain. Prim, oh young Prim! I'm so sorry! Madge, you started it all. I will remember! Boggs, I only knew you for so long. But in that time, I loved you so. Finnick!! AGH, Finnick! You were, ultimately, the most memorable. And I will never forget. It pains me that Annie will have to raise her child alone without the comfort of a loving and supportive husband. It pains me that Katniss will now live in District 12 with the haunting memory of her late sister's death. It pains me to read over the scenes of the ruins of the mayor's house, knowing a young and brave soul used to live there. It pains me that a worthy commander had to be sacrificed to preserve such a cause. But all good books have their martyrs. And all books have their evils. I hate Snow. Always will. Coin was corrupted. I didn't see her as she should have been. And I'm glad they are both dead. Very glad, actually. One thing really bugged me. When the victors were all gathered before Snow's execution and Coin presented the idea of having a final Hunger Games for the Capitol's children, I was totally dissapointed when Katniss voted in favor of it. Peeta had a great point. They were fighting against the Hunger Games. How can you win and go back into those old habits? Yeah, history repeats itself. That doesn't mean we should let it. Oh, and Peeta!!! ERGH *HATE FOR SNOW GROWS*. IHATEYOUSNOW. I really do. He tortured Peeta, altered him to attack Katniss. I hate hate hate how he had to be tortured that way. Only shows how much he loves you, Katniss. Lucky duck. I love him more. *Overall Series: Ugh, I'm just bummed it's over. Definitely one of the best series I've ever read, all the way up there with Harry Potter. I fell in love with the characters, hated some too. The books were just so amazing. The whole idea for them is so very complex and interesting. It's literature. And I love it.
