I don't know if this should be my favorite book, but I have no doubt that it is. I've read it at least once a year every year since it came out--1999, I think. Most of the times I've read it, I didn't even mean to read it all--I just wanted to read a passage here or there. But the book insisted. So what is it about? Short answer: The meaning of life. Long answer: Birth defects. 20th century theological paleontologists. Jewish scholars, flayed and unflayed. The terra cotta warriors of Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi. Waves. Clouds. Sand. Numbers. All these things (and more!), in Dillard's own particular order. Does it have its flaws? Yes. Dillard's style is strong but regularly clunks loudly. Her insistence on believing in god--and in speaking in terms of god--is still not convincing, despite the intelligence she brings to the subject.

This is a fascinating debate about the historical Jesus between renowned liberal and conservative scholars Marcus Borg and N.T. Wright, respectively (both of whom also happen to be close friends). The book presents one essay by each of them in response to a question or topic ("How do we know about Jesus?", "The Death of Jesus", "Was Jesus God?", etc.) At the heart of the matter is their disagreement about whether the truth of a gospel story is dependent on it being grounded in a particular historical event. That is, Wright believes that "the truth of the Christian gospels depends on the basic factuality of their reports about Jesus," whereas Borg believes there is "metaphorical truth in the gospel narratives which does not depend upon it also reporting a specific historical event." Interestingly enough, in spite of their disagreement about how much is historical and how much *needs* to be historical, their descriptions of what the Christian life looks like are perfectly aligned.

Wow. Good stuff. I was kind of expecting some of what was revealed in the end, events prior made it obvious. But the other stuff, also a bit surprising but at the same time I could tell it was coming. I love how Childress builds his characters. You really get into Daniel and Tim and their friendship. Daniel seems so naieve and really just ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time throughout most of the book.

Well written and interesting but not in the same league with The Help!

This is an enjoyable book, just remember that its target is young-adult/teenage readers. The characters are a little undeveloped and overly emotional, but that doesn't stop this from being an entertaining story. I actually read this book after having seen the movies, and after visiting the town of Forks and LaPush beach in person. To me it was more enjoyable being able to visualize where things took place, and have a mix of my own real-life experiences with the characters in the book. I'm usually partial to books vs. movies, and here again the book proves superior. I just laugh at the people who get mad because "Vampires don't sparkle in the sun!" Haha... don't you see, the brilliance behind the popularity of this book is that Stephenie Meyer twisted the traditional vampire mythos and made it MUCH more appealing. Gorgeous, long-lived, not requiring sleep, superhuman strength & speed, chivalrous and morally conscious, etc. It's this unique twist on vampires that is a big part of the popularity. I wouldn't mind becoming one with all the benefits it brings! Another huge draw is the romance between two individuals who are obviously NOT good for eachother, but who somehow fall madlessly in love despite this fat. All their logic and reason for why why shouldn't be together gets overpowered by their attraction. Some is clearly physical, but they each see mystery and intrigue with the other... and neither "fits in" with the crowd. To me the most enjoyable part of the book is the puzzle being gradually put together, the long discussions Edward and Bella have each taking turns asking questions to figure out the other. It seems in this day & age Hollywood would've had Edward & Bella ripping off each other's clothes within their first few nights out, but Edward's chivalry and the natural challenges with human/vampire relations helps keep things less physical... and that is nice to read. Yeah, this book has its haters, but its a best-seller so that has to account for something. I'm with the crowd who enjoyed the romance, the dialogue and the twist on the mythos and am quite happy to continue reading the rest of the series next.

Much, much better than "Table For Five". Bordered on formulaic but missed it by that much which is a good thing. Enjoyed the format and as before Ms. Wiggs writes very well. Could have been a little shorter and it would have been a 4-star review. Overall, enjoyed it.

I really have enjoyed this series. I actually think I liked this one better than the first one. I felt like I knew the characters better so it was a quicker read. I will be starting the third one soon!

Wonderful juxtaposition of one, ephemeral day with evocations of deep time: ancestors painted on the walls, the singing of the old house, rhododendron forests. The pageant dragged a bit; I'm not a big fan of restoration drama, which took up a longish section.
