A gripping novel that I read late in life. It's ending is surprising and will shock you. It truly represents the reality that exists in life, and that evil will always prevail over good, especially in a tormented high school setting.

Fitzgerald wrote about people dreaming about "being", but never about "becoming". It is easy to forget how hard artists must work before achieving what is often considered an over night success This novel covered not just Hemingway's first marriage but also his years of struggle as a young writer. With gifted artists and writers it is easy to think only of their successes. This novel is a telling look at how many difficult years he and his loved ones traveled. His first wife-Hadley's POV is beautifully presented.

Very interesting read, as well as disturbing. A little on the dark side, but I loved it.

I read this book while I was traveling in Peru. Dervla Murphy traveled through the Andes with her 9 year old daughter and a mule to Cusco. Though I was traveling as a backpacker, I realized how posh a traveler I was compared to the Murphys. I always stayed in my own room and usually had my own bathroom as well. I always ate three meals a day. I did have similar experiences of meeting amazing Andean people who are so different from urban Peruvians.

You can just feel something epic unfolding. You really need to read the history of J.R.R. Tolkien to appreciate these novels, thats all I can say.
Has Elvis left really left the building . . . or his spirit playing matchmaker?
First, let me start by saying this is no great piece of literature. It's no where approaching even the quality of Harry Potter, nor did I find it nearly as fascinating. Having said this, I will say that I found this book reasonably entertaining for popular fiction (think Danielle Steel with a supernatural bent) and will in fact make the effort to read the sequels. The plot: In a fit of self-sacrifice, stoic, reserved, shy, clumsy Bella decides to move in with her father in the gloomy Pacific Northwest, so as to give her mother the opportunity to spend time with her new husband. Sun-loving Bella hates Forks at first, but soon finds ample compensation in the form of her magnetic attraction to a mysterious student by the name of Edward Cullen. He's hot, quiet, protective, possessive, and perceptive...and she soon finds the attraction is reciprocated, but there's a little complication: Edward and his entire family are "vegetarian" vampires. As if this weren't wacky enough, there's also a new nest of vampires (a little more carnivorous) on the scene and lusting after Bella's blood. Final thoughts: This book reads like articulate fanfiction. Need I say more?
