I use this book (and the ever-growing website) as a reference whether I am going to a new town up the road or driving across the country. I never go on a trip without consulting it. It has steered me wrong once or twice, but the wins are BIG wins.

I'm reading this slowly as it is very sad. What has surprised me the most is the reaction of the world to the Amish forgiveness. It's a normal Christian response (one would think) yet most people seem stunned by it. Some are even skeptical to the point of thinking that the Amish are doing this only for the media. Yet the Amish shun the media. I find myself wishing I had the type of community life that the Amish do.

** spoiler alert ** At first I thought that I was only going to give this book 4 stars but when I got into the swing of things it was clear that I couldn't. I have never read a book that made me so excited about getting home to read it, or one that steers my mind away from the geography test. Actually I'm sure quite alot of things can do that. If you have not yet read this book I strongly urge that you look for it next time you're in a library/ bookshop. *spoiler* I was so upset when rue died and could really feel Katniss's sadness. I thought the whole idea was intruiging.

I think this is the best book I've ever read. I can't name a better one.

The book is broken up into three parts. The first two are pretty hard to get through due to the raw descriptions of midwifery and the general lives of women in the days of Jacob. But the third part makes this a book worth reading. It gets you thinking about what you are passing along to your own daughters (children) and what has been passed on to you.

The Girl Who Cried Monster is afflicted with that terrible Goosebumps condition: the plot does not have enough content to fill a book; it would've been better suited as a short story. While the dreadful padding is difficult to ignore, the story does manage to maintain a reasonable level of suspense -- at least enough to get you through to the end.

Merton was a hermit monk who had a Best-selling autobiography... quite a feat.

... a most enjoyable 'history' book, though quite opinionated it covers varying historical events which have molded the world we know today...
