I really enjoyed this newest addition to the ever-expanding genre of dystopian YA literature. Strong female protagonist, no neat and tidy ending (obviously making way for the next volume). I've been able to pitch this book to both teen guys and gals and they love it. I'm hoping a colleague will be able to snag an ARC at BEA.

Exhausting to read...but a very good book.

This was a terribly written book. It had potential but was all over the place. It supposedly took her 10 years to write it and it was still so poor. No one in my book club liked it. If I could give it a 1/2 star I would.

A book that manages to turn what might be a dry policy report on downtown shopping malls into a study on the nature of American politics in the 1970s and 80s. Friedan basically contrasts the 1950s and 1960s urban renewal projects, which were funded by the federal government and bulldozed much of the old downtown, with the smaller, locally funded private-public partnerships that evolved in the 1970s to build downtown shopping malls and mixed-use office complexes. These projects were immensely more successful than their earlier counterparts and formed some of the empirical evidence that allowed for the transition from the command-and-control regulation of the Great Society to Carter's and Reagan's deregulation. Friedan shows that they had real tangible benefits for all city residents, but that they could not shoulder the burden of city poverty or even stop urban decline on their own. They showed instead how government bureaucrats could shed their stodgy image and act as aggressive and successful risk takers.

The most freaking amazing book I ever read in my life about Shiaism. I didn't even comprehend 10% of it. I lost my copy and am now willing to do anything to get it back or to get a new one. Hard to find but I will get it even if I have to goto ansariyan.org (in iran!!)
