A small, curious book about a man who goes to live in a castle in the forest. Ten chapters, only three characters; as far as novels go there's not much happening here. I discovered, however, that if I approached this work as I would a set of paintings, I began to appreciate it more. Nature abounds - scenes of forests and thunder and the sea, and the internal, dreamlike deliberations of Albert and his guests are breathtaking. The design of the physical book is also remarkable, even minimalist, with a centerfold of a corpse in the back that I almost missed. File this under prose poetry, fantasy in form if not in content. A bit of Hegelian philosophy, too, although that pretty much blew past me as I went.

This is my all-time favorite book. I've read it at least five times and it is the one book that comes with me to whatever city I move to. Oh, the heartbreak, the crazy wife, Jane's perserverance through it all. Plus a (somewhat) happy ending. Tears are welling in my eyes just thinking about it.

I picked this one up at a local used bookstore awhile ago and tried to read it but just couldn't get into it. Then, I saw a few goodreads friends had read it and enjoyed it so I decided to give it another chance. And, I'm soooo glad that I did. I think I just wasn't in the right place to read it earlier. But, this read was wonderful! I really enjoyed the book - the writing alone is outstanding. I was amazed at the luscious writing ... the descriptions of time and place were just amazingly well written. The author was able to describe the place in a way that just made me feel that I was there, experiencing every single, beautiful word. And, then, by putting that beautiful place up against the brutal and ugly world of slavery, McBride was able bring that time in our history alive for me. The story is focused on the complexities of slavery - the system, the brutality. And it really brings all of it to life. And I was glad that McBride seemed to bring to focus the fact that no one was able to break the chains of the system - white or black. This was not a book focused on the evil of the white man - it was focused on the evil of SLAVERY itself. No blame really - just a exploration of the system and its complexities. That was quite refreshing and gave me a different perspective that usually seen in books about this time in history. One element that I really found interesting was how McBride gave the reader a view modern-day African American society through the eyes of a slave. Those passages were fascinating to me. Those visions haunted me and gave me so much to think about. I really enjoyed this book - very compelling and interesting. I definitely recommend it!

This is a gorgeous book--one of the best love stories I've ever read. The main character was somewhat off-putting for me at first, but then I'm a long way from seventeen. I did something with this book that I can't recall ever doing before: as soon as I finished it, I began it again.

This novel 'had me at hello'. I thought the beginning of the story was beautifully written and I was invested in the plot. We are introduced to Victoria, a little girl who was in and out of foster care families and group homes until the age of 10. Her experiences and reactions to them tugged at my heartstrings; basically, she became ultra-defensive, defiant, and deemed herself unlovable. I was really pulling for the little girl! At the age of 10, despite her best efforts, Victoria was fostered by a kind woman named Elizabeth. Elizabeth taught Victoria the language of flowers and slowly earned Victoria's affection. But of course, true to her history, Victoria messes that up, too. Sadly, I began to lose interest about half way through the book. Without giving away major plot elements, I can just say, pardon my pig latin, the book got majorly uckedfay upay. The second half focused on 18 year old Victoria, after she has aged out of the foster system. Yes, I get it, flowers are Victoria's friends, not people.... This is why I found the way her adult relationships unfolded completely unbelievable. The characterization seemed off and the plot rushed and underdeveloped. I ended up giving this book 3 stars (4 for the beginning of the novel and 2 for the end).

I think I love Glynis Knacker. She is so angry and bitter and gives absolutely no quarter. My kind of lady. This book wasn't the easiest of reads; at times Jackson's rants got a little bad to bide but in rerospect this was always a man on the edge of something rather terrible. For a great book on the terrible way the health system is run in the good old US of A then look no further . As an account of terminal illness I am as yet ill equipped to comment but it rings so true. The ending may have been a little sweet and bowtied but forgiveable as at the moment I think I need happy endings ; an antidote to the previous horror. As an aside it is a long time since I have sat and ignored all calls in order to finish a book. Just what I needed a little more self indulgence and in lent too!

This was way better than I expected. Entertaining fiction that rings emotionally true, even when the plot goes creepy and sad. I would recommend this as an intro to Phil Roth.
