Katie’s stepfather has just died, and she, her mother, and step-brother move to a fictional small town that I gather is in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They will be living with and taking care of Uncle Frank, who is actually no relation to them. Newquay is a former mining town that is currently almost dead. The mine had collapsed 30 years prior, killing several men and giving rise to tales of ‘knackers,’ the ghosts of miners, turned evil and trying to tunnel their way out. Katie does see a ghost, but it’s not a miner and doesn’t seem evil, either. Actually the ghost is quite helpful. Other issues explored in the book include Katie’s stepbrother Jay not feeling welcome in a family that no longer includes his dad, and so becoming a trouble-maker in an effort to get sent away. A fun, quick read. Interesting incorporation of local lore and Cornish customs. Ages 9-12.

Jack Ryan isn't as cool as John Clark, but thus far, it's still a good book. I got tired of one of the bad guys, though--the former Vice President. That was what got me to put this book temporarily on hold--I just couldn't hold interest quite that well with other reading projects.

sure, it's melodramatic and flawed and unrealistic and occasionally saccharine. but, goddamn, can bronte make characters rise off the page. and, i'm a little in love with jane. i want a woman like that.

Smart and twisted story
The book was pretty good. The ending is rather weird. I guess I'll leave it at that, as to not give away anything meaningful.

I am so glad to have Lily actually connecting with her new boyfriend Jack in such a way that he may become permanent. She has grown-up feelings, and recognizes them, and isn't running away from them, or Jack. Lily is growing, coming out of her shell, and becoming more confident in herself, and others. She is willing to see that opening yourself up to others and their feelings SOME times does not end in pain, and is trying, once more. Lily went to be in her little sister's wedding, and helped Jack solve a missing child case that transformed into a multiple murder case as well. It kept you guessing as to who the missing child was, right up until the end. The murderer was hidden from us as well. It is my favorite of the first three as well, and LOVE that it's a very serious series, and that they don't keep rehashing the details of The Bad Thing that happened to Lily, 8 (or so) years ago. Lily is faced with some demons of the past, and is better for it. She goes home and sees her family and friends, From Before her life changed, and lives through it. She hangs around some kids, and seems to connect with them, even though she's convinced herself she doesn't like them much. All in all, a damn good read. Very addicting, and I finished it in one day. I will read on, until the library doesn't have anymore.
I give it 4 1/2 stars. I loved reading this book, even though it took months and I would sometimes go for a week without getting very far and there were so many characters and plots that I would forget what had happened and get confused. This book does not follow a linear narrative, it can be hard to follow. But the characters are real, the stories are amazing, and the writing is excellent. I feel like a better person for having read this book. The Bronx, Lenny Bruce, the shot heard round the world, it reads like a lesson in american culture with a little politics thrown in.

This is a definitely beach book but fun and worth reading!
The pace and action in this were even better than The Da Vinci code. Gripping but easy reading - perfect for a long rainy day.
