The author and his girlfriend live for 2 years on the island of Kiribati -- very enlightening about a part of the world that I really knew nothing about, and full of cleverly-described, ridiculous, frustrating, and hilarious experiences. I don't think the title of the book is really described in the actual text, so don't get your hopes up if that's what you're looking for...! Definitely reccommended.

This book was ultimately a very depressing story of people who can not break through family and social restrictions. Consequently, none of them develop fulfilling personal relationships. Grace, the main character & narrator, obeys the orders of her bitter mother: "know your place." While Grace becomes an accomplished professional (a bit unbelievable, given that she is so influenced by her role as trusted servant), but never experiences love as either daughter, lover, wife or mother. All of the characters are trapped in their pasts and by the mistakes of their parents. The one character who tries, is punished in the book's final revelation, a memory from the past.

I absolutely adore this book. I've read it so many times that the cover is nearly falling off. It shares a spot on my bookshelf of favorites next to my Harry Potter, Series of Unfortunate Events and Warriors books- books that I've loved and reread a million times since my childhood. Every time I pick it up and start reading I get sucked into Rose's world all over again. I, personally, like that the story is told in different points of view because I think it gives more of an in depth view into Rose's world and the people she shares it with. This is definitely a book that everyone should have on their bookshelves.

Great short stories in here!! And not a boring loser one in the whole lot. This gave me some good ideas of authors to explore and was thoroughly delightful reading for the kids and me. The selection varies widely in length and subject matter, with a nice heavy dose of mild horror stories that appeal. My favorites were "Baby in the Night Deposit Box" by Megan Whalen Turner and "Jimmy Takes Vanishing Lessons" by Walter R. Brooks.

This book was one I was not sure I would like. There was nothing extraordinary in the style, plus I'm a wimp about violence, so I kept expecting to have to put the book down and take a break. But, this was true page turner. I even pulled an all nighter the day I brought it home. I loved the story and the incredible pacing, and I aprreciated the fact that the main character is something of a non-hero. A great read, which I then forced on my non-ficiton loving husband, who also enjoyed it.

I know some people really liked this book. Maybe I just don't do the whole short story thing who knows. But I had a HARD HARD time getting through some of these. I'm going to finish up the Charlaine Harris story and probably the Sherrilyn Kenyon story and I am calling it good. This one is definitely going on paperback swap!
