Too clever by half is the best phrase I can think of to describe this book. I still can't believe I finished it, because I found the experience of reading it mostly excruciating. It follows the many-year affair of a woman who can't seem to find a job or a direction in life and a boorish academic a-hole who uses her over and over and treats her like crap. It's one of those ha-ha-isn't-my-life-pathetic kind of books, but I never really saw the humor in it. Holding onto a thought and actually exploring it seems too daunting a task for the author to complete. I can't figure out if it is the author or the protagonist who appears to have attention deficit disorder. One thing I did like was the voice of the protagonist - told in the first person and talking to the reader directly, saying things like, "I haven't told you about this yet...". There were a few clever turns of the phrase here and there, and I probably missed many of them in my haste to finish and escape this book.

This was my first Scottoline, and I wasn't disappointed. Although everything tied up a bit too neatly in the end, the story was interesting and mostly believable. The quick pace compelled me to read in one afternoon!
an american man wrote this. how unbiased do you think this is!? content was interesting... etc... whatever.

The novel is set in Dublin and Boston of the 1950's. The hero is a coroner named Quirk who had married one of a pair of sisters who came originally from around Boston abd narried Irish Irish. The best parts are in Dubln, which is what the novelist knows best about. A few minor faults in verisimilitude (sp) re Boston of the Fifties and its people distracted me but the story is interesting and Quirk is a wonderful character. The faults of verisilitude could have been cleaned up mostly if Banville's publisher had a fact checker that was over 25. No one in Boston in the Fifties had the dream of owning his own limo company. They might have dreamed of having a fleet of taxis but no one would dream of having a limo company. The character with this dream, supposedly from Delaware, comes across like a lonesome cowboy. Also,Banville has a bunch of Irish-American gosoons insult the lonesome cowboy from Delaware as being less than a man because he and his wife have an adopted baby. Granted that the Boston Irish may have occassionally odd and insulting senses of humor but the scene is preposterous and probably a reflection of Banville's superior Euro-Irish view of the Boston Irish. [Note of interestest: The author--John Banville used the pseudonym of Benjamin Black but was mostly in his John Banville mode at the L.A. Downtown Library where he spoke. At the end, some lady who heads some members' group got back on the stage to thank Mr. "Banfield" for coming and to apologize for not mentioning a previous past president of the group, her husband.]
Delightful. In the style of Beckett and Gombrowicz. If you loved The Phantom Tollbooth as a kid as much as I did, you'll probably like it.

Darkly gorgeous prose reimagining of archetypes & fairy tales nestled within a pre-WWII story of a OCD teenager bitterly resentful of his father's remarriage following his mother's death.
So can you tell I'm a Harry Potter fan? Yes, waiting with bated breath for the last book, but a little sad because then it will be over. I just re-read them all again, and I keep wanting to point an imaginary wand at things and shout, "Accio purse!" "Expelliarmus!" "Alohamora!" Yeah, I'm a nerd.

Truly a great book. I was laughing out loud from the very beginning.
