I saw this author speak at a company called Palantir. The company hosted an event featuring this author and his book was given out at the door. I gave the book 4 stars. The book makes you question and think hard about the methods we've used to motivate employees, family, and ourselves. The theories explained and the evidence put forward in this book just "feel" right, if you know what I mean. At the end of the book the author included a sort of cliff notes summary of each chapter for quick review and reference. He also writes what he called a Twitter summary. Here it is, if I remember it correctly: "Carrots and sticks are so 20th century. Autonomy, purpose, and mastery are in!" No spoilers, but the book talks about intrinsic motivation, and how the old method of using carrots (aka money)as incentives and sticks (aka punishments) as deterrents of unwanted behavior often lead to results opposite to those we were trying to encourage. The book is coming from a business-oriented slant, but it has made me think about how I try to encourage and steer my children's behavior and choices. It was a very interesting, fun, and quick read.

A very delightful, humor-filled book that discusses the points of pregnancy that everyone else is afraid to tell you. Definitely do not read this book before becoming pregnant, or you may not decide to procreate. There are several chapters for future-fathers, and my husband found them helpful.

I haven't read this in so long it was almost like a new book. (Wouldn't that be great - a NEW book by Heyer!? ) And I still liked it.
I recently read the original and perhaps this book would be better read with some distance between the two, but I still found I HILARIOUS! The awkward moments between some of the characters are made more so by the presence of the unmentionables and the way a certain story line ends is particularly satisfying!
Kisah seru dan mendebarkan.... Plot cerita yang seru.... Tokoh yang imajinatif...=)

One of many, many books Dixon has recommended to me, and I'm not sure he's ever been off, at all, in his recommendations. It seemed especially appropriate, coming from him, as I remembered once saying to him how, if I was in the position of having to either kill someone else or be killed, I don't think I could possibly willingly kill the other person (which he respectfully scoffed at, at the time, I believe). There's really nothing I can say to do justice to say how much I liked this book and the argument and manner in which Grossman presents it.
This was a funny, original book written by Dan Savage of "Savage Love" fame, the sex column that appears in weekly newspapers like the Village Voice. The title comes from the title of a right-wing pundit's book, "Slouching toward Gomorrah." The author, who I had never heard of, along with other conservative commentators Savage quotes complain that America is on the wrong path and that feminism, homosexuality, pornography, gambling, etc. are responsible. Since Americans are such sinners in the eyes of right-wingers and since 9/11--the book was published in 2002--the eyes of Muslim fundamentalists, Dan Savage decides in his book to take us on a tour of American sinnery and celebrate it. The book is divided into about 10 chapters, 7 of which focus on the 7 deadly sins. Sometimes Savage loses his way a little. For instance, he wants to champion all the sins but he barely holds back biting judgement of the proud-to-be-fat people in the gluttony chapter. This one I thought was the most interesting. Anyone know what a "feeder" is? Yeah, I didn't either. Savage makes good points, sometimes ones you don't want to hear. His chapter on Pride (you guessed it, gay pride) is certainly controversial, like Savage himself. But I found his opinions refreshing. Besides that, this book is pretty much hilarious. It's not quite as good as "The Kid" or "The Commitment" but definitely worth reading.

I read this book as a read-aloud to my 3rd grade students. I loved it...... it was actually kind of interesting to have both the child (them) and adult(mine) perspective going on at the same time. Much of it went over their heads, but they were still able to enjoy the basic storyline. I also got to practice my Spanish skills :)
