I like dragons, so I like it for that. It was a nice, pleasant fantasy.

Marc Basset, overweight and unlucky in love is a venomous restaurant critic. Following the suicide of a recipient of one of his vitriolic reviews, he meets the grieving widow. This sparks a mission to apologise to all the people in his life that he has offended with varying results. It also leads him into a new career as Chief Apologist for the U.N. and that's when the trouble really starts.
Layla, the young protagonist, spends half the year in Minneapolis with her blended but broken nuclear family, the other half in Hyderabad with this family and a large community of relatives and friends. The story centers around Layla's return to Hyderabad to reluctantly complete an arranged marriage and continues through the early weeks of the marriage. Layla and her groom, Sameer, each harbor devastating secrets that play out in rather predictable but still engrossing ways. THe plot does spiral into the melodramatic and slightly lurid, with tantalizing foreplay on a motorcyle in a monsoon downpour, a young bride held against her will, Sameer's "secret" pretty easily divined early in the novel and culminating in a hideous event- I felt slammed over the head with a sledgehammer by all of the monumental events that happen to this young woman in the space of a couple of months. What I most appreciated about this book was the detailed portrait of an Indian Muslim community struggling to maintain its cultural traditions while moving headlong into the modern, Westernized world. Ali conveys the protagonist's and other characters' cultural confusion- the identity crises, the faulty expectations, the hopes and disappointments- in unsentimental but expressive and colorful language.

I started reading this for a book club and threw it away after the first part because I didn't care for the explicit sexual content / language. I don't think of myself as being overly prudish, but when inappropriate language is used unnecessarily (it seemed incongruous and unrealistic), I lose respect for the author and his craft. If the author is going to take risks with that kind of language, it better be to the purpose.* I didn't find it was. {*Salinger, for example, uses a ridiculous amount of cursing in his writing, but I feel that it is an important part of his style, and so adjusting the language would very much affect his writing. A second example might be in Tim O'Brien's Going After Cacciato, where the nature of the book - being set in the Vietnam War - arguably requires the harsh language associated with war.}

I felt that this book went absolutely nowhere.

Adam Black, Fae prince and manipulator of human events, is a great character. It is a toss-up whether he or Jericho Barrons in the Fever series is Moning's greater accomplishment. Both are courageously unlikable a lot of the time, but charming and even conflicted. Adam Black's transitions and character growth are complex and believable. Adam Black human and isolated is an interesting take, especially his invisibility to all but a sidhe-seer. I would have liked to have his son be more than a passing reference, but it was enjoyable to revisit the MacKeltars.

thru reading others reviews, i expect this to be a "depressing" book about an average man;s life through 3 marriages, death, funerals, etc...

Emma is a good book that would recommend. For a classic of its age, I did not find it a hard read. It is a bit of a slow story introducing many characters and story lines, but the author manages to keep it interesting to continue. Overall, the character development was good. The main character was definitely snobbish which left her a little less than desirable at times, but it gave her room to grow and develop in good ways toward the end of the book. Overall, Emma is a good book that I recommend for anyone interested in the classics. It's not a quick read, but worthwhile nonetheless.

I really miss the boy and the man. I was so so sad when I finished reading their story. It was painfully addictive to read.
** spoiler alert ** A 3.5 star rating would probably be more accurate, but I did like this book and it had some laugh out loud moments, so I rounded up to a 4. The first 200 pages or so were essentially a rehash of the first book in the trilogy from Daniel and Suzette's perspective, which I know has bothered some readers. I was fine with it because it has been a while since I read the first book, so the refresher was helpful for me since so much of that story is intertwined with this one. Also, I was again entertained by Daniel and Richard's antics in trying to move and hide George's body without anyone finding out about it. Where the book started to go downhill for me is actually where the events of the first book ended and Daniel and Suzette's story really took over. It felt like an afterthought that was just tacked on to the end of Richard and Christiana's story, which in some respects it was. In my opinion, it made this book a lot less cohesive. The tone seemed to change and a lot of the humor was lost in the transition. There were still a few amusing moments, mainly having to do with the addition of Daniel's mother to the cast of characters, but it didn't seem as lighthearted as the beginning of the book. I guess that makes sense since most of the time is spent with Daniel and Suzette apart and dealing with Lord Danvers, but still, it made for a less entertaining read. Overall, this certainly wasn't a bad book and it does stand alone for readers who missed the first book in the trilogy. However, my recommendation definitely would be to read the books in order as it makes for a much richer reading experience. I look forward to reading Lisa's story soon, hopefully with Robert Langley as the hero.
