This is a book about the underground railroad and the signs that were available for slaves to know that a house was indeed a safe house. It talks about how the animals helped the slaves make it to safety.

This book was recommended by a facilitator of a workshop I attended. Because it was cheap, I got it. Overall, I think it is a helpful book for anyone who is pretty bad at time management (which most would say they are, including myself and that's why i read the book) but honestly if you're someone who has a little ADHD and has been successful I your career, you've had to implement some of Hobbs' suggestions otherwise you wouldn't have made it out of high school. :-) Nevertheless, I took home some ideas and it is clear that time management is time management no matter what decade we're in (btw, this book was written in the late 80s)
I liked the book because I like the author but it wasn't one of my favorites.

i stalk mr. mann's corpse. one of the first serious writing exercises i gave myself was to write death in venice from gustav's p.o.v. and that story is only the beginning - i have a big soft spot for all of his work.
I feel a little bit terrible for NOT liking this book as much as everyone else seems too. Infact, I don't think I even finished it. The language is very beautiful, but for me it was just such a slow read with pages and pages of description. I'm trying to decide if I should try to read it again...
Doctor, linguist, scientist, natural historian, and writer of what is probably the most stunning prose in the English language, Sir Thomas Browne was a virtuoso in learning whose many interests form a representative portrait of his age. To understand the period which we more usually refer to as the Scientific Revolution, we need to understand parts of the intellectual and spiritual background that are often neglected. This collection of essays covers all aspects of Thomas Browne's work and thought. It offers the specialist and the student a wide-ranging array of essays by an international team of leading scholars in seventeenth-century literary studies who can extend our understanding of this extremely influential and representative early-modern polymath by embracing recent developments in the field, including literary-scientific relations, the development of Anglican spirituality, civil networks of intellectual exchange, the rise of antiquarianism, and Browne's own legacy in modern literature.

The book is amusing, but I can't help thinking that if one tries any of this stuff while not being extremely charismatic, one is likely to get hurt.

Read River God, then Warlock, and then The Seventh Scroll. These are books I couldn't put down.

I picked this up on a whim and found it to be a fast read and compellingly written. The author covers various topics from (mostly present day) scientific inquiry relating to human and animal behavior that pertain to his interest in "bursty" behavior patterns. Alternately mixed in is a recounting of a story of a history-making Knight and a military campaign from 16th Century Hungary and Transylvania. I'm interested in history, so this eastern European story was fascinating to me. I'm still not so sure it has very much to do with the other topics covered in the book. There is a connection between the "burst" pattern of wars and social movements to this historical story, but perhaps not enough of a specific connection to tie in this story which takes up half of this book. The rest of the book's more modern day topics jump around and are not covered with much depth. This lends the book to easy and entertaining reading, but leaves the reader wanting a few more details. I certainly would have liked more content to have been offered up on a number of the subjects. Nonetheless, despite its faults, this was very enjoyable to read, and I am not going to complain further about the structural logic of the text. I say just go with it and enjoy the book. It covers Poisson, Einstein, wheresgeorge.com, Homeland Security, the early 1500s, Hungarian & Transylvanian history, power laws (a mathematical term), random patterns and distributions, among a few other things.
I have three sisters and if any one of them need a kidney or other non-vital organ, she would have it. This book highlights some very profound medical research ideas and debates, while telling a painful story of a girl who loves her sister. Sniff..tear...
