Of all of the books that I’ve read recently this was definitely the best. This thriller has an interesting set of characters and is full of exciting plot twists. The main character, Katniss, is a teenage girl who lives in District 12 of Panem (what becomes of North America in the future) with her mother and younger sister Prim. Every year the capital of Panem hosts the hunger games. For these games 2 tributes from each district, a boy and a girl, are chosen at random to compete on behalf of their district. All of the tributes are taken to the capital for training and then dropped in an arena to fight to the death until there is only one left. When it is time to find out who will be the tributes of District 12 that year, Peeta, the son of a local baker, and Prim are chosen. Unable to fathom the thought of watching her younger sister be killed or possibly starve to death, Katniss volunteers to take Prim’s place. When the tributes arrive in the capital, they go through training in order to find their fighting talents. After Katniss impresses everyone with her training score of 11 out of 12 (the highest score that anyone has ever received), the tributes are interviewed. In Peeta’s interview he reveals a secret that will change the games forever!

Che dire? Ho amato il primo libro della serie (The Hunger Games). Ho adorato Katniss, Peeta e Haymitch.

Even though I adore both Lisa Jackson and Nancy Bush, I had to give this one 4 stars. While it was a very good book, for some reason it just wasn't one of those that grabbed me by the throat and wouldn't let go until I had finished the last page. I still recommend to fans but it just wasn't as scary and nerve jangling to me as others they have written. Although there WAS one scene that hit on a particular phobia of mine and sent me jumping a bit. LOL
I really enjoyed this one -- far better than the sequel.

This was the first A. Christie I ever read. I was very disappointed in the solution, I felt she cheated. I didn't read her again for a long time, which was a shame.
Translating this book from English to Spanish was challenging.
This is a well-written funny book sure to appeal to reluctant readers... BUT I will likely not buy it, as it promotes delinquent behavior with only the most cursory of consequences... The twist halfway through while superficially clever took away one of the only outs, and while if it had been a commentary on intrusive laws like Florida's baggy pants law it might have worked, the overthetop nature and the safety issues ignored to me made the book unredeemable at least in the ARC I have... Plus in the end I think everyone is in denial about the mental illness of the main character... Read "in Defense of Thaddeus Linkletter" for a similar book with a much more redeemable main character, or Janet Tashjian's "multiple choice" for an interesting book about a self-destructive game played by the teenager... Reread after seeing the movie... I can see what they were going for, however this was one of the rare instances where the movie captured it better than the book... Curious where it goes from here but still don't like the first book very much

I tried reading this book a few years ago and it totally turned me off. This summer I've been studying WWII, the Great Depression etc, and remembered this book and thought maybe I should try it again. I found myself really enjoying the plot, writing, and cleverly woven-in history. It gave me a great peek into the past. I would definitely recommend this book.
