** spoiler alert ** (take two - my computer ate the first draft) I was wary after reading the reviews, but after putting the book down, I'm glad I was pleasantly surprised. I think after all the havoc and chaos that the characters went through in the previous books, slowing down the story to concentrate on their growth was a good decision. I might have postponed it just a little longer if I was the author, but I'm grateful it happened when it did. It didn't seem forced, nor cliche. I know that some readers felt like Seregil was sulky and filled with self-doubt, but I didn't think it was hyperbolic, nor unwarranted. I saw a glimpse of Seregil behind his jocose facade and met the man, still young and foolish and uncertain. I appreciate that, so many times characters can seem too powerful, too experienced and infailable - Seregil is not. He may be more experienced than Alec, but in this book she shows us the way he still stumbles, searching for his identity in Skala and in Aurenen. We also got to see more of Thero, which was a very good idea. He's a good character and I'm glad to see she's developing him. The only thing that I thought would have made it better was when Seregil goes into Haman territory and when he gets beaten later for Alec to cause a bigger scene than he did. He was very subdued and I thought it would have made better drama. All in all, good story developing and a war brewing. Small notes: pg 353 "It felt indecent, really, like having someone watch you take a crap." Really? Did you really just write that? That's a little fail I stumbled into. Another small fail: although not as apparent or frequent as in the first book, but still some trouble with quotation marks. The editor needs to watch this, I found a couple.

I picked this one up and thought that it looked awfully short (comparatively, I mean). Turns out it was only about half of the characters; the next book in the series will catch us up. Other than that, I haven't got much to say--if you liked the first three, you'll read this one no matter what I say, and if you didn't like them, you won't bother with this one anyway. I, needless to say, LOVED IT AND CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE OMG w:KNDVOPieFNESDAMCM;LKJASDPOFHE:FF!!!!!!!!!1

A wonderful novel, although the foreword frightened my little sister so much I had to stop reading it. I delight in Dahl's delight in mischief of all kinds and can scarcely believe he had the guts to add such a scary foreword to a children's novel. Dahl's invented witches are wonderfully evil as well as hilariously flawed. You can always tell a witch because she has no toes; she is bald and wears a wig which is probably horribly itchy and she can smell little children.

"BULLIED" BY JEFF ERNO This book was incredibly moving. It delves deep into several stories of being bullied and how hard it is on the younger generation today. The stories all relate to kids that are homosexual and how they are treated in school by their peers. It also shows how kids are viewed differently depending on their personalities. What I found most interesting is it doesn't matter if a person is homosexual, sometimes they are treated differently depending on how they present themselves rather than their sexual preference. You could have two kids in the same school both with homosexual tendencies and one could be treated fine while the other is treated as an outcast. This book is definitely one I would recommend, not just to the younger generation that are homosexual but to any of the younger generation that have bullied or have been bullied. It really does hit home and teaches some profound lessons on what it's like to be in both positions, as well as going in depth into the mind of both the bully and the victim. This is one of the issues today that has become more prominent and I very much feel this book gives great insight into the ongoing problem of bullying with our youth. Overall I enjoyed this book. I certainly learned a lot and for that alone I would give it a 5, however, it does get preachy at times. Since I had to skim over parts that were getting over bearing, I give it a 4 star rating.
