One of my all time favorites

Finally got round to reading the last book of the trilogy. Wasn't half as enjoyable as the previous two. Also felt that the ending was a bit of a cop-out and didn't feel satisfied at all. Felt that there wasn't adequate closure with a number of the key characters.

i read this after my sister recommended it, and given that i already agreed with honore's perspective on people needing to take it easy, i figured i'd like it well enough, but he was a little quote-crazy. i remember my pre-ap english teacher used to scold our freshman class for being too "comma-happy" because, even if used correctly, the overuse became distracting. that's exactly how i felt in reading this book. i understand that honore is a journalist, and perhaps that's why he used so many quotes, but i felt a large majority of the people he interviewed and quoted in his book were highly unnecessary. the general idea of what he was trying to say was too diluted with other people's one-liners that it made this much anticipated read a less enjoyable one.

I read this as insurance, in case I end up going to see the film version, as I'm still gutted I didn't enjoy the book of The Time Traveler's Wife as much as I thought I ought, having stupidly seen the film first. Although I already knew Anne Hathaway was playing Emily and imagining her long, drippy face saying all her lines put me off a bit. However, Emily/Anne quickly became a potential new BFF in comparison to Dexter, who has to be the biggest tosser in all literary history. But it wasn't just that. The style annoyed me; the mix of present and past tense, the self-conscious contemporary cultural references, the inane set pieces (parlour game with girlfriend's posh family, overblown 'themed' wedding, blah, blah). I feel I should give it 3 stars - the 90's were my decade after all and I too have a 'Dexter' in my life (who thankfully isn't an insufferable p***k) - but it's just not worth it. The ultimate betrayal, though, is that Jonathan Coe is quoted on the back cover. Mr Coe, I expect better of you.

Miles is bored. The he meets Alaska at his new boarding school. She's unconventional, beautiful, risky, and screwed up. Miles is captivated. Then Alaska is gone. Can Miles fact the truth about what happened the night she died? This coming of age novel is brilliantly conceived and written. Miles has been called a contemporary Holden Caulfield.

Took longer to get through than I anticipated, so sadly that knocks it down a peg in my review. I didn't want to chew right through it for some reason. However, I enjoy watching Stephenson's characters develop towards one another and here it was done in fits but sufficiently. I also enjoy Stephenson's explorations of our we are to interact with technology in the future - very scary and exciting!
I just finished reading this book to the boys (8 and 6). As a read-aloud I really can't say enough about this series. First and foremost, these are true stories, a fact that really seems to resonate with my boys. Second, Ralph Moody lives according to a moral code that is impeccable. Moody or "Little Britches" treasures hard-work, honesty, integrity, and goodness. And finally, these stories are just plain fun to read. It is easy to become absorbed in the childhood of Little Britches. Indeed it is a way of life that has long since dissolved in this country, but the need to resurrect the work ethic and values that are evident on every page is sadly evident with one glance at today's headlines. The "Little Britches" series is exceptional, and I enjoy it because the stories are great fun, but I absolutely adore it because of the conversations that it has faccilitated in our house and the emotions we share. The Home Ranch ends with a scene that involves Little Briches and Hazel thanking each other for the summer they have had together. Little Britches explains, "That was the first time I ever wanted to kiss a girl, but I didn't. Hazel whirled away and raced for the house. With my high-heeled boots and chaps on, I couldn't run fast enough to catch her." Seeing the expression on Caden's face as I read that...priceless.
Perfect for spring, you know, love is in the air and conquers all and all that...
