I would give this book 3.5 stars if possible but didn't think it quite deserved 4. Stephen King's voice comes through very clearly in some of the passages but much of the time it feels more collaborative and less individual (not that it's a bad thing, just an observation). The story contains some lovely creepy bits and nicely disturbing situations but isn't as, well, scary as Mr. King usually is. (Though, true to form, my favorite character dies, as in almost every other novel of Mr. King's that I've read.) And, to be frank, there is a lot of homo-eroticism, owing, I believe, to Peter Straub. Stephen King has never been afraid of a few genitalian references but it reaches unusual levels in some passages of this book. (I am *not* referring to the relationships of the main character; those I felt were reasonably done and not erotic but emotional.) That aside, it's pretty good. I think it would be a better read for someone younger and/or not as familiar with Mr. King's other work but could also be a fairly good rainy weekend read for anyone. I read it while traveling, which I think made it a bit more interesting and realistic, but of course that is no prerequisite for enjoying it. In the end, there remained several unanswered questions (the impetus for Black House perhaps?) but was pretty well done. I would easily consider re-reading it and/or recommending it to a friend.
